British minister meets PM, COAS, political leaders and NHRC officials

The British Foreign State Minister for Africa, Asia and the UN, Lord Malloch Brown, who arrived Kathmandu, Friday morning, met with political leaders, security officials and human rights activists.

Brown upon arrival reached the UML office to meet Bharat Mohan Adhikari. After holding discussion with the UML leader, Brown went to parliamentary party office of the CPN (Maoist) to hold talks with Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda'.

In the afternoon, he met with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at Baluwatar. According to PM's office sources, Brown suggested Koirala to go for coalition among the parties for formation of new government.

In response, Koirala reiterated his stand in favour of cooperation and unity among the political parties, the source said.

He also held meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Rookmangad Katawal at Nepal Army headquarters. NA in a statement said, the duo discussed current issues.

The British minister also met with the officials of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday.

On the occasion, Brown expressed hopes that the NHRC could play a crucial role in protection of human rights during the transitional period.

NHRC chief Kedar Nath Upadhyaya appreciated the support extended by British government for promotion and protection of human rights in Nepal.

Upon his arrival at the Tribhuwan International Airport, Minister Brown had said his government will continue its support to the new government in Nepal irrespective of whichever party leads it. nepalnews.com ia July 18 08
