President Yadav vows to strengthen national unity and sovereignty
President Dr Ram Baran Yadav pledged Wednesday that in his new role as the head-of-state he would try to address the aspirations of Nepali people and work towards their welfare, while calling for an end to the politics of violence and killings to strengthen the unity and sovereignty of the country.
In a brief note of gratitude he read out from his new office immediately after assuming the responsibility as the first President of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal following a grand swearing in ceremony at Shital Niwas, the presidential palace, President Yadav emphasised that political parties should stick with the "politics of consensus" and move ahead side by side.
He also called upon all to work together to come up with a development strategy fit for the modern age. He said "democratic system" is imperative for a civilized society and invoked the ideals of human rights and press freedom for the same.
Stating that during his long political career he got to understand the country closely, he said that as Terai-Madhes, Himal (mountain region) and Pahad (hilly areas) are unique in their own way it is important that all work towards maintaining racial and communal harmony.
Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katuwal was first to reach the President's office to extend his congratulation to him. He reiterated to the President Yadav, who is also the supreme commander of the national army, that the army won't compromise on country's nationality, sovereignty, territorial integrity and democratic system.
Meanwhile, India has congratulated President Yadav on his election, saying that it (his election) "represents a new chapter in Nepal's historic democratic transition."
In her congratulatory letter, India's President Pratibha Patil said, "As a close friend and neighbour, India remains steadfast in its commitment to support Nepal in this critical transition. We attach the highest priority to further developing our close and multi-faceted relationship with Nepal. I look forward to working with you towards further strengthening the understanding and cooperation between our two countries." nepalnews.com ag July 23 08
