Kathmandu starting to stink again

Come rainy season and Kathmandu is starting to stink again with the perennial problem of uncollected garbage back again, causing serious eye-sore and possible health hazards in the city's streets and main thoroughfares from Friday.

Heaps of uncollected garbage has piled up in the streets after locals living near Okharpauwa landfill site again started prohibiting garbage trucks from dumping the city's waste citing the same reasons as in the past.

They say that they would not allow Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) from transferring the garbage to the landfill site until their demands for more development works in the area are not met.

Jit Bahadur Balami, member of the Landfill Site Concern Committee, told Kantipur Daily that they are not allowing garbage trunks to transport city's garbage to the site since the funds being provided to them by the government for development works in the area is not enough and that the assurances given to them till now has also not been fulfilled.

However, KMC's Executive Director Dinesh Thapaliya informed that they would start collecting the garbage from Sunday onwards. He also requested the locals of Sisdole area not to obstruct the garbage trucks from transporting city's waste to the site. nepalnews.com ag June 15 08
