KMC looks for options to solve valley garbage problem
As the standoff with Sisdole locals over disposal of garbage in the Okharpauwa Landfill Site continues much to the dismay of city residents who are forced to bear the sight of streets and pavements being littered with garbage including the awful smell wafting from it, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has said it would use Sundarighat in Lalitpur for dumping city's wastage for the time being to put off the valley's recurring garbage problem.
Since last week, locals of Sisdole near the only landfill site of Kathmandu have been blocking KMC garbage trucks from transferring the city's waste there demanding that the government repair two local schools, construct roads and start other development works in the area.
KMC's Chief Executive Officer, Dinesh Thapaliya said they have already started the process of dumping garbage in Sundarighat, but said it would be a temporary arrangement only. He further said that two landfill sites are necessary for the valley taking into consideration the possible obstruction in managing city's wastage in the coming days also.
On Monday, the Sisdole locals had again blocked 18 KMC vehicles from dumping garbage at the landfill site, saying that they would continue the obstruction until all their demands are met.
KMC, however, said that all their demands have already been met, claiming that some of the local only want to indulge in what he said was politics of garbage. nepalnews.com ag June 17 08
