Transporters in strike; students also enraged

The recent government decision to allow the transporters to hike their fare by 25 percent and provide 43 percent discount to students has pleased no one.

The streets of Kathmandu, which are usually jam-packed with vehicles, sport deserted look following the strike called by transport entrepreneurs against "insufficient" raise in transportation fare Sat Jun 21 08 nepalnews.com/rh

Transport entrepreneurs have announced transport strike in Bagmati zone from Saturday.

They have demanded a review in fare hike decision; compensation for vehicles damaged during vandalism; and reconsideration of discount level to students.

Following the hike of price of fuel, the government had allowed transporters to raise the fare by 25 percent – as against the suggestion of the transport fare fixing committee to hike it by up to 35 percent. Likewise, the government has also increased discount to students from 33 to 43 percent. Both the decisions have irked the transporters.

On the other hand, the students have also resorted to strikes and vandalism demanding that discount for students be raised to 50 percent. nepalnews.com sd Jun 21 08
