Check violence against women: NHRC
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the government to take effective measures to curb the increase in instances of violence against women.
The Commission summoned home secretary Umesh Mainali and Inspector General of Police Om Bikram Rana at its office Monday and informed them about the increase in number of complaints related to violence against women filed at NHRC.
According to NHRC, the cases of severe torture against women by their own husbands and other members of the family including beating and parading them naked on accusation of witchcraft, burning them alive by sprinkling kerosene over their body, murder, dowry related violence, rape and other inhuman acts have increased.
As Nepal is a signatory to a 1979 convention on eradicating discrimination and violence against women, NHRC said, these kinds of incidents is a serious violation of human rights and hence cause of serious concern. nepalnews.com ag June 24 08
