'One Madhesh' demand is a threat to national integrity, says Khanal

CPN (UML) general secretary Jhal Nath Khanal has described the 'single Madhesh province' demand of Terai-based parties as a threat to national integrity.

"The one Madhesh one province demand is a game to disintegrate the nation," Khanal said at a press conference organised at the UML headquarters in Balkhu. "UML will never back this demand."

Describing the obstruction created by Madhesi parties in the Constituent Assembly proceedings as a violation of the agreement reached between the government and the United Democratic Madheshi Front few months earlier, the UML chief claimed that the government had not agreed to amend the constitution to incorporate the issues that were agreed upon.

By raising the 'one Madhesh' demand, the Medhesi parties are showing sheer disrespect to indigenous groups, Dalits and Janajatis living in Terai, Khakal said, adding that multiple provinces could be established in the Terai plains.

He, however, expressed confidence that the stalemate in the Assembly would end within 2-3 days as the parties were into serious discussion on the issue. nepalnews.com mk June 30 08
