Businessmen in Birgunj take to street demanding security
Business community in the southern border town of Birgunj organised street protest on Sunday demanding security in the wake of growing cases of
abduction and extortion.
Hundreds of local businessmen participated in the protest rally, chanting
slogans and blocking the roads around Ghantaghar area.
They complained that the local administration failed to check growing
crime, especially the extortion and abduction of businessmen in the town,
despite their repeated calls.
Members of the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industries said they were
forced to take to the streets after the local administration didn't pay
attention to their demand for quick action against a group of people that
had attacked Deepak Agrawal, a local entrepreneur, last week.
The business community in a memo submitted at the district administration
office had given 48-hour ultimatum to arrest and initiate legal action
against the attackers. nepalnews.com mk Mar 09 08
