Subash Ghising resigns as DGHC chief
Chief of Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) Subhas Ghising resigned
as the administrator of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) on
Monday.
District Magistrate of Darjeeling Rajesh Pande told journalists in
Siliguri, "Subhash Ghising has already submitted his resignation letter.
The letter has been addressed to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb
Bhattacharjee. It would be sent to the state administrative headquarters
in Kolkata Tuesday."
He denied disclosing the text of the letter and said the state government
would decide on his successor as the chairman of the DGHC.
He further said, security escort for Ghising would remain the same
considering threat perceptions.
Reports also say that Ghishing is not well since last night due to fever
and is expected to stay at Siliguri for the next few days before heading
for Darjeeling.
The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) led by Bimal Gurung had been demanding
resignation of the DGHC chief alleging him of not taking enough
initiatives for a separate state of Gurkhas in India.
The GJM had called strike that crippled life in three sub-divisions of
Darjeeling district since Feb 20 along with an economic blockade since Feb
17, demanding a separate state and resignation of Ghising. nepalnews.com
