China closes Everest climb until May 10
China has closed climbing of Mt Everest from northern face until May 10
citing potential safety problems due to increasing environmental problems
and crowded climbing routes.
In a notice issued by Mountaineering Association of Tibet Autonomous
Region of the People's Republic of China, the climbers have been notified
that the local authority is not in a position to accept application for
expedition before May 10.
The restriction is imposed on Mt Cho-Yu as well. Both the mountains will
be opened after the Olympic torch passes through it.
Reports say, Chinese government also has asked Nepali authorities to
restrict any expedition on Everest from south side before May 10. However,
the request was rejected.
April and May is the peak season for climbing Himalayas. nepalnews.com ia
