Protesting Tibetans arrested in Kathmandu
Tibetan refugees in Kathmandu held protest in front of the UN office in Lalitpur Monday morning against what they call brutal clampdown of ‘pro-independence’ demonstrations in Lhasa by China.
Police and the protesters clashed for sometime before police arrested at least two dozens refugees.
Some 100 refugees had reached the UN office to stage demonstration, demanding that the UN take note of the ‘suppression’ in Lhasa.
Police baton-charged them and took those arrested away in trucks.
Tibetans had staged a major demonstration in Bouddha on Mar 10, marking the 49th anniversary of the Dalai Lama's escape to India after an unsuccessful uprising in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. They had held demonstrated in front of the UN office this Saturday as well.
Reports say nearly 80 people have been killed during demonstrations in Lhasa. Chinese government has admitted that it used force to control the riots.
Nepal government has repeatedly clarified that it supports the 'one China' policy and that no anti-China activities will be allowed on Nepali soil.nepalnews.com ia Mar 17 08
