Prachanda claims foreigners are working for CPN-M’s defeat in polls; deplores ‘biased’ media coverage

Maoist chairman Prachanda has claimed that some foreign power centres are actively working to ensure that his party suffers a blow in the constituent assembly polls.

Prachanda said this while addressing a mass gathering in Pathhri of Morang district Wednesday morning, but did not name any foreign power centre that is “active against the Maoists”.

The Maoist strongman, however, claimed that the election environment in the eastern districts had shown indications of his party getting majority votes.

He also made it a point to hit at the UML for the latter’s ‘refusal’ to forge leftist alliance in the election. He said the UML came under pressure from the United States and India and decided not to go for electoral alliance.

Prachanda is currently in eastern tour for polls campaign.

Meanwhile, the Maoist chairman has stepped up his criticism at big media houses for writing news against the Maoists.

Addressing a programme in Itahari Tuesday afternoon, Prachanda accused that media were writing against them guided by foreign money.

“What are these journalists writing? What do they think of themselves?” he thundered, “Writing news against Maoists by pocketing foreigners’ money? Who gave such right to these journalists?”

He further accused the media of not giving enough coverage to the killings of one dozen Maoist cadres whereas they highlighted even “petty interventions” by the YCL.

As Prachanda kept on lash outing at the media in the programme, the journalists covering the event had walked out of the venue.

Subsequently, Sunsari Press Union, Itahari Press Club and Press Chautari, issued separate statements deploring Prachanda’s uncalled for remarks against media. nepalnews.com sd/ia Mar 26 08
