Armed groups ready for negotiations, form talks team
Responding to the government call for talks, four armed groups operating
in the Terai have on Wednesday expressed their willingness to hold talks
with the government.
Issuing a joint press statement, the armed groups said they have formed a
four-member talks team. However, they haven't disclosed the names of those
in the talks team.
A statement signed by Rajan, central coordinator of the Madhesh Mukti
tigers (MMT), Nagaraj, chairman of the Terai Cobra, Rajan Mukti, chairman
of Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha (JTMM) and Pawan, coordinator of
Samyukta Jantantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (SJTMM), says they have agreed to
sit for dialogue in context of the government agreeing to provide
universally accepted rights to the Madhesis and Terai residents through
talks and consultation.
The armed groups have demanded that the government release their arrested
comrades and withdraw cases filed against them to create a conducive and
credible atmosphere for holding talks. They have also asked that the time
and place for dialogue be fixed through mediators on Thursday, saying that
the government would be responsible for the safety of their talks team
members.
