HRW slams police action on Tibetan protests
New York based rights monitoring body Human rights Watch has expressed concern over the continued police intervention in the protests orgnaised by Tibetan refugees in Kathmandu.
In a statement on Wednesday, Brad Adams, Asia director at HRW said, "The threat of detention and deportation to China is being used by the government of Nepal to silence peaceful dissent," said.
"Police have used excessive force to disperse some protesters and to arrest others, while beating some of those in detention," he further said.
The rights monitoring body urged the Nepal government to end arbitrary
detention, threats and harassment against peaceful Tibetan protesters.
"Kathmandu has been a sanctuary for Tibetans for decades," said Adams
adding, "These arbitrary arrests and intimidation tactics go against this tradition and sadly reflect the behaviour of Chinese authorities across the border in Tibet."
