US concerned over mistreatment of Tibetan protestors
The US has expressed concern over the treatment of pro-Tibetan protestors by the Nepali security forces.
In her meeting with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Thursday morning, US envoy to Nepal Nancy Powell urged the Prime Minister to ensure that the right to peaceful protest was maintained and that the human rights of Tibetans in Nepal are respected.
The government has put strict vigilance on Tibetan protests in the wake of possible hindrance to the Olympic torch rally atop Everest this month.
Similarly, Powell and Koirala also discussed the current political-economic situation and the US diplomat welcomed the Prime Minister's statements calling for consultations and consensus on the formation of a new government.
Powell is scheduled to leave Nepal soon for the US for consultations with her government on Nepal's new political situation. nepalnews.com ia May 01 08
