Mother's Day being celebrated today
Hindus throughout the country are celebrating the Mata Tirtha Aaunshi or
Mother's Day on Monday amid fun and festivities.
"Mata Tritha Puja" is a festival which falls on the last day of the dark
fortnight of April or early May. The spring festival is regarded as a day
when one shows appreciation and gratitude to his/her mother for her
unconditional love and undying support. Children present mothers with
gifts and sweets and receive wishes from her for a better future. Sons and
daughters living separately, come with presents and delicacies to spend
time with their mother.
It is also a day of reunion for married daughters with their mothers. The
entire day is filled with festivities and merry making.
Sweet and gifts shops in Kathmandu were seen crowded since Sunday with
many of them putting array of sweets and various other delicacies on
display.
Those who don't have a mother pay obeisance to Mata Tirtha. Making
offerings at the Matatirtha pond is associated with the myth of a young
boy who saw a reflecting image of his dead mother in the pond's water.
People believe that paying homage to this site will bring peace to their
mother's departed soul.
The festival is also observed in India and various parts of the world
where Hindus reside. nepalnews.com ag May 05 08
