UML picks Khanal for top job
The leadership dispute in the CPN-UML has finally ended with the ongoing meeting of the central committee appointing Jhal Nath Khanal as the new general secretary.
The central committee, Thursday, approved Khanal's name for the top position after a hectic debate.
Khanal, who reclaimed the top position after twenty-years, said, "Now I feel my shoulders are heavy with responsibility." He had held the position of general secretary for six years before 1990.
A UML source told Nepalnews that KP Sharma Oli, a strong contender for the post, and few other leaders had initially opposed Khanal's name, but later yielded ground to him. At the start of the meeting this morning, former general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal had proposed that Khanal be chosen as the general secretary.
Nepal had paved the way for leadership change by offering his resignation after the party performed badly in the recent Constituent Assembly election.
The UML central committee meeting, which continues at the party headquarters in Balkhu for the past 15 days, will take some policy decisions and decide whether the party's will join the next government. nepalnews.com mk/sd May 15 08
