Forceful activities against media unacceptable: PM

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said the government will not tolerate any kind of forceful activity against the media sector.
Inaugurating a photo exhibition organised by Himal Media in Katmandu Saturday, Koirala observed that the Nepali press has gone through many challenges in the past, and expressed confidence that the fourth estate would be able to stand up to the difficulties in the coming days.
He also said the press people have been facing difficulties because of the Maoist-aligned YCL, and informed that he has discussed the issue with Maoist chairman Prachanda.
Saying that the resent democratic situation would be impossible without the role of the media, Koirala maintained that press freedom is a must for the development of the nation.
Stressing that the media should play a role of a watchdog while maintaining transparency and fairness, the Prime Minister expressed his commitment to provide any kind help the media would need in fulfilling its duty of keeping the people well-informed. nepalnews.com kp May 16 08
