Political consultations to continue on Thursday
As the day for the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly slated for
May 28 approaches, the parties have stepped up consultations to break the
deadlock.
The Nepali Congress, Unified Marxist Leninist and Maoists are going to
hold meeting, Thursday where NC and UML are preparing to propose to the
Maoists to amend the constitution to allow simple majority to form or
topple a government.
The NC, UML and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum had reached an understanding on
Wednesday to bring about such amendment in the constitution as well as
ensuring a provision of ceremonial president.
The Maoist leaders have been saying they do not want to bring about such
amendment in the constitution at this juncture. They have also preferred
giving continuity to present system where executive chief Prime Minister
also carries out the responsibility of officiating head of state.
The consultations need to reach to an understanding quickly in order to
ensure smooth CA meeting on May 28 when it would have to implement the
republic declaration, among other things. nepalnews.com sd May 22 08
