People of Kirat community celebrated their most important festival 'Ubbhuli' on Saturday by praying the nature for good production of grains.
Kirat people living in Kathmandu perforce 'Sakela' (a form of dance) in different groups at Tundikhel in their traditional attire.
Even Maoist chairman Prachanda was seen playing the band along with other participants at the Ubhauli ceremony.
Speaking at a special function, Prachanda said all ethnic communities would be getting equal rights after the end of monarchy that imposed the concept of 'single language, single attire.'
Talking to the Nepalnews, chief priest of Kirat Rai Yayokkha Ghana Shyam Kirati said that they had been celebrating this festival in praise of the nature for giving so much for human beings.
He expressed disappointment over the vanishing tradition of celebrating this festival in the villages although he said he was happy with the growing interest of youths to celebrate it in Kathmandu.
Similarly, Smriti Kirati, an NGO worker, also that she was happy about the growing awareness among people of Kirat community about their festivals. The community also celebrates 'Udhauli' in winter to thank the nature for giving grains to the people. nepalnews.com ps May 24 08
