Three parties in close consultations
Top leaders of three parties – Nepali Congress, Unified Marxist Leninist and Maoists – are in a close consultation in Prime Minister's official residence at Baluwatar since Sunday morning, with the aim to resolve the political deadlock over formation of next government.
A day after PM Koirala urged Maoists to take initiative to form new government, Maoist chairman Prachanda is expected to submit a proposal on the nature of new government.
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Maoist chairman Prachanda, UML general secretary Jhalnath Khanal are in the meeting venue.
The major parties differ over the issue of whether to amend the constitution prior to forming new government or not. While NC and UML have said they would want the amendment to ensure that a government can be formed or dissolved based on simple majority, the Maoists want the current system of requiring two-third majority to change government to continue.
The meeting is also expected to finalise the names of 26 nominees for the Constituent Assembly (CA).
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has said that the political deadlock would be resolved within two, three days.
He said so at a meeting with visiting US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Dr. Evan Feigenbaum, according to PM's foreign policy advisor Aditya Baral.
The US official arrived in Kathmandu, Saturday, on a three day visit. He is scheduled to meet with leaders of four largest political parties to discuss the formation of a new interim government, the need to end political violence, and efforts to craft a new democratic constitution. nepalnews.com sd May 25 08
