Min Bahadur Sherchan has set the world record by scaling the 8,848 meter summit early Sunday morning with his climbing guides.

Sherchan, a retired soldier who had previously climbed smaller mountains before attempting Mt Everest, is said to be in good health and was safely coming down the icy slopes, reports said.

He has beaten the record previously set by Japanese climber Katsusuke Yanagisawa, who climbed the peak at age 71.

On Thursday, legendary climber and former mountaineering guide Appa Sherpa scaled the world's tallest mountain without artificial oxygen for a record 18th time. nepalnews.com ag May 25 08
