Muslim brothers must discard old practices
N.P.UPADHYAYA
Societies differ, differ with it are the customs and traditions. Different societies have framed rules and regulations that more often than not differ even in substance with those of the others. Hindus have their own societal traditions and culture. So have the Muslims and the Christians. It is natural that when religions differ, it beings differences in their cultures and traditions as well. This has got to be respected by all who conclude that religions were just a medium to express their beliefs and aspirations and that people practicing different religions should be allowed to practice what has been commanded by their respective religions.
But then yet, with all the humility towards all the prevailing religions in the world, some religions have surprising rules that simply look odd in this 21 st century. For example, talking of the Islam- a highly scientific religion in the world of today which preaches peace and peace only among the world population immaterial of what religions they practice, the manner they take the bonds of marriage is simply disheartening.
The utterance of the word Talaq! Talaq! Talaq! Three times in the stretch of a breath brings colossal damage to a happy family and that ultimately shatters the entire family.
Though I am told that there has been some relaxation in the divorce system in the Muslim community and things have been not that easy as it was in the past. But then yet, at times one could learn or hear of such divorces being brought into practices through the mere utterances of the strange word Talaq! Talaq! Talaq!
One such sad incident recently happened in the a small town North-East of Calcutta, India wherein one husband in his "dream" (unknowingly indeed) uttered Talaq for three times and Lo! The disaster followed later.
In fact the husband in all his honesty described this event to his friends and the friends later began talking of this event in public and the news finally brought the Mullahs and the Maulvis into action.
The High Priests instantly issued an instruction, Muslims call it FATWA, and the couple with three kids had to undergo the trauma of the divorce.
What is heart rendering is that both the husband and the wife love each other and do not want to get separated with each other but the… FATWA and the superstitious traditions still prevalent in some what illiterate areas, let's presume that, has separated them.
The educated Muslims in the community, here and there, must take serious note of such events and wage a sort of campaign against practices that were not compatible with the needs of the changing society.
The Muslims are wise enough. How to deal with such a situation in the future they perhaps know better.
