October revolution or a Counter-revolution!

Niraj Aryal

Deteriorating health condition of the aged prime minister and the growing differences between the SPA and the Maoists combined; pose a threat to the already vulnerable peace process that is on in the valley.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s frequent absence from all-important peace processes and a visible lack of experience among the remaining duffers in the cabinet to tackle the pressure exerted by the Maoist, the hidden threat posed by the supporters of the erstwhile regime plus the growing international concern relating to the induction of the Maoists in the cabinet without disarming them, where will this lead the country all together is still unpredictable?

But what is clear is that, the shortsightedness on the part of the government, merely pleasing the Maoists by succumbing to their demands and also making frequent comments deriding the National Army by the cabinet members themselves and in conjunction lately stripping King’s birthday celebrations as a national holiday are seen as steps to enflame the crisis than minimizing it. This is certainly inducting fear first, and hatred lastly, among the men who supported the erstwhile regime. “But the question is how long the benefactors of the royal regime will keep their mouth-shut and if provocation continues unabated, this may lead to a Counter Revolution”, experts declare.

The Maoist concern on the other hand that the government by succumbing to the international pressure to alienate the Maoist may finally give way to the launch of the so-called “October Revolution”. Perhaps it is in the making.

The portion of tainted media in Nepal that is busy irritating the men in uniform is also not helping the cause, but according to a foreign design may be helping the cause of the total disintegration of the nation as a whole. Anyway, this finally leads to a point in Nepali politics where the moderates may have to face a tough time.

Taking this into consideration a clear division among the moderates either siding with the extreme left or siding with the extreme right can be predicted, which may finally divide the country into two extreme and diametrically opposing philosophies, thus leading to a fatal clash between them.

Be it a Counter-revolution or an October revolution, the nation is surely heading towards an extreme condition where the majority poor will again be the targets. Thus a clear statesmanlike vision on the part of the government is what is needed to avoid any such eventualities.

For the conclusion, Prime Minster Girija Babu’s frequent absence from the peace-process is hitting the nation hard.
