Interesting Piece
I really enjoyed reading your cover story on CA polls (“Doubts Persist” SPOTLIGHT Aug 31). I am doubtful whether eight parties’ oligarchy will hold the elections
on time. The environment for holding the election is still not there. The rural parts of the country are still terrorized by the Maoists and other groups. Even Maoists are not permitting other political parties to launch the campaign. In this situation, it is only fool who believes that eight party government will hold the election. As a sovereign people, it is the duty of every citizen of Nepal to dump this government.

Rampant Misuse
Leaders of seven party alliance and Maoists are skimming off the creams of
the state misusing the state treasury(“Doubts Persist” SPOTLIGHT Aug 31) . In the name of Loktantra, there are only a handful of politicians and their cronies who are looting the country’s treasuries. In these circumstances, it is our foolishness to believe that the elections will be held. If the election is held, it is going to be no more than a farce. Maoists will not permit other political parties to visit villages. By attacking CPN-UML workers and Nepali Congress workers, Maoists have shown their real face. The analysis made in your cover story is very interesting and logical.

Sorry Picture
At a time when criminals and killers are getting all kinds of respect and people are compelled to listen to speeches on peace and rule of law from those who killed many innocent people in the past, the institution of monarchy and person heading the institution is accused as the main culprit and is treated as a pariah of the country. It
is unfortunate to say that these kinds of situation will have very negative impacts in society. Terrorists with totalitarian agenda are getting all international recognition under the behest of Nepal’s so called democratic neighbor India. Undoubtedly, India - which promoted, supported and provided all logistics to Maoists to wage war against democratic regime- will have to pay a long term price. Of course, India may be happy now to see denouncement of the institution of monarchy which is very pro-Indian in nature and promoting the communists, which are anti-Indian in nature.

Climate Concerns
Nepal is a beautiful Himalayan country. I have already traveled Nepal twice in the last few years and I am planning to come again. I have not realized that the climate change has such implications in Nepal. After reading your cover story Climate Change Affecting Livelihood, I realized that Nepal needs to take some drastic steps to reduce its effects. Although I find that Practical Action-Nepal is taking small steps providing necessary information about the climate change, I think it is too small. The
government must have to work to launch the program in bigger scale. Otherwise, the country like Nepal might have to suffer a lot.

On Editorial
Madhav Kumar Rimal’s editor’s note remains one of the attractions of the Spotlight. I have been reading his editorial for the last one decade. One of the important aspects of his editorial is that he never supports the government, however powerful it may be. I always read his patriotic views and thought-provoking ideas because they show that he is independent-minded person. Keep up the spirit.
