Kathmandu's Road link to Terai Re-opened

Katmandu Aug. 5: The capital's road link with the Terai was re-opened Friday after landslide
debris was removed at Dhanusha village along the Prithvi Highway in neighbouring Dhading district,
the national news agency said quoting police.
Vehicular traffic was restored three days after the landslide debris was cleared..
Police are controlling the movement of vehicles at Dhanusha village since minor mudslides are
still continuing after the re-opening of traffic along the highway linking Kathmandu and Pokhara.
The swollen Trisuli river swept away two vehicles.
Home Minister Govinda Raj Joshi detailed the devastation caused by this summer's floods and
land-slides nation-wide.
At least 103 persons are dead or missing while 60 persons were injured in accidents triggered
this summer by heavy monsoon rains in 68 of the Kingdom's 75 administrative districts, Joshi said.
Property and infra-structure damage was estimated at Rs 150 million while government has
distributed Rs.8.25 million in relief .

Father Rapes Daughter

Kathmandu, Aug 5: Police have arrested Purna Bahadur B.K. of Gulariya municipality ward
on the charge of raping his own 6-year-old daughter under the influence of alcohol, the national
news agency said Saturday.
The accused raped his disabled daughter when his wife was not at home.
Rajkumari B.K., wife of the accused, has severed ties with her husband after the incident.

Boy Kidnapped, Murdered in Janakpur
Kathmandu, Aug.5:

The body of a 14-year-old boy was found hanging from a tree Wednesday after he was kidnapped outside his home in Bauharva village near Janakpur city Sunday, daily newspaper Gorkhapatra said in its Saturday editions.

Police have arrested three suspects including Ajim Rain of the same village and are on the lookout for others for the murder of Bharosi Mandal.

Tensions have heightened following trading of charges of political vendetta for the murder.

Police raided the house of central committee member of the Nepal Communist Party(ML) Khubir Mahaseth for allegedly harbouring some alleged murderers. nepalnews.com.br


Chinese National Boards Osaka Bound Flight

Kathmandu, Aug.5: 

A Chinese national illegally boarded a Royal Nepal Airlines flight as it was about to takeoff for Osaka on Tuesday despite beefed up security at Nepal's only international airport following the Christmas eve hi-jacking of an Indian Airlines Airbus on a regular flight from Kathmandu to New Delhi.

The December  incident was the first hi-jacking of a foreign airliner out of Nepal. Bao Ji Jun who slipped through immigration and customs at Tribhuvan International and boarded the aircraft has been arrested for questioning.

Government has formed a three member committee under the chairmanship of Home Ministry Joint Secretary Bijaya Raj Bhattarai to investigate the lapse and submit a report within 15 days; other members of the committee are an official of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and a police officer. nepalnews.com br


Nepal, Andhra Pradesh  Sign Accord

Kathmandu, Aug.5: 

In the presence of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, an agreement was signed between the Nepalese Chamber of  Commerce and Industry and the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries in Hydrabad Thursday to expand information technology and agriculture businesses between Nepal and the central Indian state.

FNCCI President Pradip Kumar Shrestha and FAPCCI President Mohan Lal Gupta signed the deal.

Shrestha asked Indian entrepreneurs to invest in the nascent information technology sector in Nepal.

By coincidence, Prime Minister Koirala like American President Bill Clinton visited India's " Cyberabad" to the end of an official visit to India Wednesday.

Koirala cancelled plans to visit Bangalaore which is rocked by a strike following the kidnap of a leading actor by a dreaded dacoit in the neighbouring of Karnataka. nepalnews.com br


Nepali Illegal Immigrant Held in Hungary

Kathmandu, Aug.5: 

Nepalis were among 100 illegal immigrants arrested Thursday in three separate incidents in Hungary crammed in a small truck in danger of suffocating to death, reports from Europe said.

The number of Nepali stowaways in the truck was not known. " It is safe to say the police saved their lives," said Col. Attila Krisas, spokesman of the national Border Guards Headquarters in Budapest. "Another hour and they may well have died," AP quoted Krisas as saying.

The Nepalis like Indians, Afghans and Somalis did not have identification papers, the report said. The incident comes after a disaster in June when 58 Chinese immigrants suffocated to death in a sealed vegetable truck as they were being transported to the English port of Dover.

Increasing number of Nepalis are leaving home in recent years to escape proverty for better opportunities in East Asia and the West sometimes posing as dissidents fleeing persecution at home. nepalnews.com br


Opposition Leader Says Koirala Visit Fruitless

Kathmandu, Aug.5: 

First reaction has been mixed to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's visit to India.

Leader of the main opposition in Parliament Madav Nepal  said the outcome was a "disappointment from the viewpoint of national interest."

The Chief of the UML told journalists Friday the Kalapani and Laxmanpur dam issues remained unresolved but welcomed the Indian decision to waive the additional four percent additional duty on Nepali exports against the spirit of a bilateral trade treaty.

The FNCCI in a statement welcomed the Indian decision to lift the duty slapped unilaterally by India restricting exports across the 1,700 kms open border.

The FNCCI said Indian decision to set up laboratories  at Raxaul and Gorakhpur to inspect quality of food exports will help expand export of agricultural goods.

Representatives of 100,000 exiled Bhutanese refugees were diasppointed no mention was made of the 10-year refugee issue in the joint press statement issued after talks between Koirala and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

" We knew this would be the outcome. Now we will launch a movement inside Bhutan within December," said Chief of the Bhutan Gurkha National Liberation Front D.B. Rana Sampang said. nepalnews. com br


2 women insurgents killed

Kathmandu, August 4:

Two women Maoist insurgents were killed on the spot in a clash with police in Tinkhande village of Gorkha district, about 200-kilometer northwest of Kathmandu, Friday.

Police said insurgents suddenly attacked the police team patrolling the area, which forced the police to retaliate.

Other Maoist insurgents were also injured but they were taken away by rebels. In the incident, one police was also injured, police said. According to police, some weapon, ammunitions and important documents were also recovered from the deceased insurgents.nepalnews.com yl


Father-in-Law Charged for Murder

Kathmandu, Aug. 4: Sita Sharan Yadav has been arrested and charged for murdering his
daughter-in-law who refused and resisted his sexual advances on July 30 at Gausala village in
Mohottari district, national news agency said Friday.

Police are also on the lookout for the mother-in- law and another relative suspected of  complicity in the murder Husband Raj Kishor Yadav has been released on bail. nepalnews.com br


Employees of Public Enterprises Protest

Kathmandu, Aug.4: In continuing protests, employees of public enterprises staged a sit-in at
Singha Durbar Friday demanding salary hikes and perks after government announced pay
increases for civil servants from this fiscal year.

Earlier, several hundred employees of state enterprises paraded through the streets of the capital
demanding the implementation of five demands including scrapping the government's policy of
selectively privatizing or liquidating non performing enterprises.

The protests are spearheaded by the Nepal Trade Union Congress and the Nepal Inter-corporation Employees' Association.

The protesters have threatened to force the closure of enterprises in the second phase of their

Floods, landslides kill 95 people

Kathmandu, August 4:

Floods killed all together 95 people and landslides in different parts of the country since this year’s monsoon season began.

Minister for Home Govinda Raj Joshi informed the lawmakers in the House of Representatives, Lower House of Parliament, Friday that 95 people were killed, 8 are missing and 60 injured because of the floods and landslides in different parts of the country since this year’s monsoon season began.

Minister Joshi said that 3389 families of 68 districts were badly affected by floods and landslides. 304 cattle were killed and 82 shades were washed away.

Minister Joshi said that property worth Rs. 120 million was damaged due to the floods and landslides.

Home Minister said that the government has already released over 8.5 million rupees to provide relief to the victims of floods and landslides in different districts of the country. Nepalnews.com yl


Further Details of Nepal, India Accord

Kathmandu, Aug.4:

Nepal and India have agreed to revive a joint commission headed by Foreign Ministers of the two South Asian states as an umbrella body to oversee bilateral ties.

The commission will have its first meeting in Kathmandu when Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh visits Nepal later this year to inaugurate 22 bridges on the western sector of the Mahendra Highway constructed with Indian assistance.

This was announced in a joint press statement issued Thursday at the end of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's  two-day official visit to India. Nepal and India agreed to form a joint committee on water resources at secretary level to discuss co-operatin in water resources. The committee will meet once every six months. The two countries are discussing forming a Cultural Foundation to conserve cultural heritage sites.

A Bilateral Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement is being signed to promote Indian investments in Nepal. nepalnews.com br


Four Indians Arrested, Charged for Attempted Kidnapping

Kathmandu, Aug.4: 

Four Indians have been arrested and charged for the attempted kidnapping of a man from Duhabi for a ransom of Rs.200,000 Monday, reports said.

The gang attempted to kidnap Satya Narayan Bhagat by enticing him out of his home and flee to India.

Bhagat currently lives in Biratnagar.

Legal action has been started against Prabhat Bhagat, Yogesh Jha,20, Lagan Kumar Chaudhari and Rajib Kumar Jha,19. nepalnews.com.br


Floods, Landslides Kill More 82 Persons

Kathmandu, Aug.4: 

Floods and landslides this summer have killed more than 82 persons as fresh floods killed at least eight persons nation-wide this week and damaged infrastructure and crops worth millions of rupees, latest reports said.

Deaths have been reported from Bhaktapur, Nawalparasi, Sindhuli and Udayapur districts.

Helicopters rescued marooned 581 families of Narayani and Djaha villages to safer ground in Nawalparasi until Thursday as the flooded Narayani river swept away hundreds of houses, reports said.

The floods triggered by incessant rains destroyed crops worth Rs.10 million, local officials said.

Diarrhoea has broken out at a camp in a school where the villagers are being cared for, reports said.

Gaur and surrounding areas are inundated after water overflowed from Bagmati, Lalbakiya and Jhaj rivers in Rautahat district.

The flooded Triyug river in Udayapur has cut off Gaighat from the rest of the district and destroyed crops planted in several thousand ropanis of farmland, reports said.

Four days of incessant rains disrupted the Janakpur-Jayanagar train service and damaged crops in Dhanusa district.

Landslides triggered by heavy rains have also blocked traffic on major highways including the 140- kilometres Kathmandu Kodari highway linking the capital city with Tibet. nepalnews.com br


Nepal, India Reach Broad Accord

Kathmandu, Aug.3:  

India has agreed to waive a four percent additional surcharge on Nepali exports against the spirit of a bilateral trade treaty, Nepali and Indian officials said Thursday. A 10 page Indo-Nepal joint press statement issued at the end of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala's two-day official visit to India broadly describes the scope of future relations between the two South Asian nations for the next millenium Prime Minister Koirala and his Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee directed Foreign Secretaries of the two countries to meet within six months to review the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship perceived as unequal by many in Nepal.

Koirala and Vajpayee directed officials to demarcate the Indo-Nepal by 2003 including disputed Kalapani which has been occupied by India since the 1960's.

Home Secretaries of both the countries will meet to discuss " mutual security concerns." Nepal and India have agreed to curb terrorist activities directed against each other from each other's terrority, the statement said.

India will establish food laboratories at Raxaul and Gorakhpur to inspect the quality of Nepali food exports, the statement said. The unilateral construction of the Laxmanpur barrage that has inundated land and flooded villages in Banke district in west Nepal figured in the bilateral talks.
"India will take steps not to adversely Nepali territory," New Delhi assured Nepal.

River projects including the delayed Pancheshwor figured in the New Delhi parley. India will help establish an information technology institute in Nepal. The statement was issued coinciding with Koirala's departure for Hydrabad at the end of two days of extensive and tough negotiations to bring bilateral relations to the " right track" after its derailment following the Christmas eve hi-jacking of an Indian Airlines Airbus on a routine flight from Kathmandu to New Delhi by suspected Kashmiri militants.

The statement was originally expected to be released Wednesday. The delay reflects the tough nature of the bilateral talks, diplomats said. Koirala cancelled plans at the last moment to fly to another cyber city Bangalore in central India which is gripped by a strike protesting the kidnapping of a popular actor by a dreaded dacoit in the state of Karnataka.

Latest reports said Koirala's darshan of the Sai Baba will not be affected by the sudden change in his itinerary. Premier Koirala also sent a personal letter to his Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee expressing his condolences at the recent massacre by Kashmiri militants of nearly 100 Hindus on a pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir. Koirala invites Vajpayee to visit Nepal

Kathmandu, August 3:

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, who is currently in India on a week-long official visit, invited Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to visit Nepal as early as possible.

According to Royal Nepalese Embassy in New Delhi, Prime Minister formally invited Vajpayee to pay an official visit to Nepal.

India waives additional duties on Nepalese goods

Kathmandu, August 3:

India has agreed to waive four per cent additional duties imposed on the export of Nepalese goods to India.

It was agreed during the talks between the delegations of the two countries in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The joint statement that was issued Thursday prior to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala’s departure for Hyderabad after completing his three-day stay in New Delhi.

India had imposed additional 4 per cent duties on the Nepalese goods sometimes ago.

Prime Minister Koirala is currently in India on his week-long official visit at the invitation of Indian Prime Minster Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Prime Minister Koirala and Nepalese delegation had series of talks with Indian Prime Ministers, Ministers and officials on several bilateral issues.

The joint statement has stated that Nepal and India have agreed to further strengthen friendly relations and expand areas of cooperation between the two countries.

They have agreed to combat terrorism and expressed their resolve not to allow the use of their territory against the interest of any of the two countries.

In the 32-point joint statement, it has been agreed that both the countries would take firm measures to check cross border terrorism and work for preparation detailed project report of Pancheshwar, jointly develop some small and medium hydro power projects, and explore areas of investment in Nepal.

Prime Ministers of both the countries have instructed their foreign secretaries to work out for the review or update the 1950 treaty.  Seven Policemen Dismissed

Kathmandu, Aug.3:

Seven policemen have been dismissed after refusing orders to take up assignments in areas affected by a Maoist insurgency that has claimed more than 1,400 lives in more than four years, police said.

Government decided to dismiss them last Thursday. The resignation of another police officer has been accepted while another officer has been dismissed for not reporting for work, another announcement said.

Another report said many policemen who have earned their pensions are resigning after government announced increased pay for employees from this fiscal year. Meanwhile, more than 1000 policemen are being trained in counter-insurgency tactics by the Army at camp near Amlekhgunj to fight the Maoists, reports said.

Maoists have mainly targeted police and activists of the ruling Nepali Congress party in their attacks.
A gang of Maoists overpowered two bank officials and decamped with Rs.40,000 north of Pokhara Wednesday, daily newspaper Gorkhapatra reported in its Thursday editions. Sanskrit scholar Gopal Nidhi Tiwari died at Pashupati Aryaghat Wednesday. He was 80.

Below Normal Rainfall In July

Kathmandu, Aug.3:

Most places of the Kingdom received below normal rainfall in July, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said.

However, Jumla, Pokhara, Simara, Biratnagar, Taplejung and surrounding areas recorded above normal precipitation. Jumla recorded 194 mm of rainfall.

Kathmandu recorded 335 mm of rain with a mean temperature of 24 degrees Celsius.
Jumla registered the lowest mean temperature of 18 degrees Celsius , two degrees more than Dadeldhura and four degrees more than Okhaldunga. Temperature was below normal in high mountain regions and normal to above normal in other regions of the Kingdom. Biratnagar,Bhiarawa and Nepalgunj registered mean temperature of 30 degrees Celsius in July. nepalnews.com br
