Maoists Release Abducted Persons, Other Details

Kathmandu, Dec.15: Maoists released three abducted persons and fled when a police search team reached a village in Dhanusha district Thursday, police said.

Udaya Mandal, Birendra Yadav and Bimal Mandal had been abducted from a village in neighbouring Siraha district.

Meanwhile,  police defused a powerful socket bomb hidden in a bush  at district police headquarters in Chitwan Thursday, police said. nepalnews.com br

Greek Foreign Minister Arriving

Kathmandu, Dec.15: Greek  Foreign Minister George Papandreou will arrive  in Nepal Monday for a two-day official visit-the first to the Himalayan kingdom by a senior Greek official, an official said
The visit is expected to boost nominal bilateral ties.

A Greek spokesman said the visit to Nepal, India and Bangladesh is aimed at strengthening Greece's relations with countries in South Asia.

Nepal has in the past said the independence of divided Cyprus should be respected.

Nepal, China Talks to End Dual Tariff

Kathmandu, Dec.15: Nepal and China  this week held their first round of talks this week to abolish dual tariff and financial fraud, an official announcement said.

Director General of the Department of Tax Bidyadhar Mallik and Director of the Department of Tax Sun Yu Gang led the Nepali and Chinese delegations to the talks that concluded Thursday.

Further talks will be held to improve the investment climate in Nepal. nepalnews.com br


King Birendra congratulates Bush

Kathmandu, Dec 14: His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev today congratulated George W. Bush on his being elected 43rd president of the United States of America.

In letter to Bush, His Majesty the King said that relations between Nepal and US would be further strengthened during the tenure of George W. Bush.

Similarly, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala also sent a message of congratulation to George W. Bush for being elected as new president of the United States.nepalnews.com yl


Koirala inaugurates first fertilizer industry

Kathmandu, Dec 14:  

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala inaugurated Nepal’s first chemical fertilizer factory in Jhapa today (Thursday).

Luna Chemical Fertilizer Company is Nepal’s first chemical fertilizer industry. Nepal so far imports all necessary chemical fertilizer from abroad.

Prime Minister Koirala said that with the establishment of the fertilizer company in Nepal farmers now would get chemical fertilizer more easily and in time.

He also asked to establish such factories in all five development regions.

Luna Chemical Fertilizer Company is Nepal-India joint venture industry, which was constructed at the cost of 260 million rupees. nepalnews.com yl


Bank of Kathmandu Ltd. Opens Hetauda Outlet 

Kathmandu, Dec.14: Bank of Kathmandu Ltd. opened its sixth outlet in the industrial town of Hetauda Thursday. 

The bank, with headquarters in Kathmandu, has three outlets in the capital and two others in Nepalgunj and Butwal. The bank opened its Hetauda branch to deliver and expand services outside the capital after several years of losses. 

The bank is now almost wholly owned by Nepalis after a Thai bank withdrew following internal bickerings. nepalnews.com br 


Khimti I Back in Action 

Kathmandu, Dec.14: The 60 MW Khimti I hydropower plant, Nepal's first in the private sector, will resume operations Thursday after repairs of a damaged pen stock pipe to end load shedding nation-wide during the peak winter season, officials said. 

The announcement comes as a big relief to consumers who have had to endure the biting cold of the winter without electricity. 

A leakage was detected in pen stock pipe days after the plant was formally inaugurated by King Birendra this month embarrassing the Norwegian promoters. Load shedding will end Thursday. nepalnews.com br 


Crown Prince Dipendra opens hydro power plant

Kathmandu, Dec 14: His Royal Highness Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah inaugurated the Cheranga Khola Micro Hydro Demonstration Scheme in Baidi of Tanahu district Wednesday.

The 35-kilowatt project was constructed at the cost of 3.75 million rupees with support from UNDP’s Rural Energy Development Programme.

Partial support was also provided by the local people and the Tanahu District Development Committee.nepalnews.com yl


Hoon Meets PM Koirala, Other Details

Kathmandu, Dec.13: Defence Minister Mahesh Acharya Wednesday sought British help to establish a regional international training centre for peace keepers in Nepal, an official said.

Acharya sought London's help in bilateral talks with  Secretary of State for Defence Geoffrey Hoon who earlier arrived for a two-day visit.

Hoon met separately with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and Foreign Minister Chakra Prasad Koirala and discussed bilateral issues including the Gurkhas serving in the British army.

Nepal wants a " just and fair pension scheme"  for the ex-soldiers of the British army while noting the United Kingdom had recently increased pensions for its former soldiers, a Foreign Ministry official said.

Gurkhas have been  fighting  for pay and pensions at par with their British counterparts. nepalnews.com br


Sahana elected CPN-ML chairperson; Gautam general secretary

Kathmandu, Dec 13: The convention of the CPN-ML concluded with electing Sahana Pradhan
chairperson and Bamdev Gautam general secretary of the party. The convention concluded early Wednesday morning. It endorsed the Bamdev Gautam's political programme that seeks continuation of "People's Multiparty" propounded by late Madan Bhandari, the then general secretary of CPN-UML.

The convention rejected CP Mainali's " New People's Democracy" and other programmes presented by some central leaders of the party. There had been stiff struggle between Bamdev Gautam and CP Mainali's factions to get their own political documents adopted by the convention and capture of the leadership of the party.

However, Gautam won with overwhelming majority. The convention elected 46-member central committee including a nine-member politburo.

The newly elected central committee members are: Sahana Pradhan, Bamdev Gautam, CP Mainali, Sitanandan Raya, Siddhilal Singh, Shambhu Ram Shrestha, Ashok Rai, Trilochan Dhakal, Radha Krishna Mainali, Kiran Gurung, Kamal Chaulagain, Tanka Karki, Keshab Lal Shrestha, Khem Narayan Dhungana, Gopal Shakya, Govinda Kalauni, Jitendra Dev, Jit Bahadur Lama, D.B. British  Minister Arrives for Two-Day Visit

Kathmandu, Dec.13: British Secretary of State for Defence Geoffrey Hoon arrived here Wednesday for a two-day visit on the invitation of Defence Minister Mahesh Acharya.

Hoon arrived in Nepal from India on the second and last leg of his two nation tour of South Asia.
Hoon will have talks with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Acharya, Foreign Minister Chakra Prasad Bastola and Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Prajwal SJB Rana. He will visit the British Gurkhas Nepal at Jawalakhel, The British Gorkha Welfare Centre in Ramechap and the British Gurkha Recruitment Centre in Pokhara.

Nepali soldiers have been recruited in the British army since 1815. “ The recruitment of British Gurkhas is the foundation pillar of relations between Nepal and the United Kingdom,” Acharya told the National News Agency. “ The visit will further strengthen the friendly relations subsisting between Nepal and the United Kingdom,” he said.

Acharya said he will discuss with Hoon  the more effective implementation of welfare schemes for ex-Gurkha soldiers from the British Army.

Nepal will seek British help in developing Nepal as a training center for international peace keeping forces. 


Russian Parliamentary Delegation Arriving

Kathmandu, Dec.13: A Russian parliamentary delegation of the Federal Council or the upper house in visiting Nepal for three days beginning Friday, an announcement said.

The delegation will be led by Mikhail M. Puska, Chairman of the Federal Committee for International Relations.

The visiting legislators will have talks with members of the Parliamentary Group of Friendship with Russia and officials of the Foreign Ministry. nepalnews.com br


Three Maoists Surrender

Kathmandu, Dec.13: Three Maoist rebels, including a girl, have surrendered to local officials recently, officials said.

Assistant area commander of Dailekh district Beni Bahadur Shahi surrendered to police at district headquarters last week.

Bin Bahadur Dangi. a student activist, surrendered to police in Salayan district last week as well.

Court Orders Dr.Joshi's Release on Bail

Kathmandu, Dec.13: Kathmandu district  court Tuesday ordered the release of former Chairman of Nepal Medical  Council Dr. Bhojraj Joshi on bail.

Earlier, Kathmandu district police had brought a murder charge against Dr. Joshi who recommended the registration of a quack Indian as a doctor with the Council.

An operation by the fake resulted in the death of a patient earlier this year. nepalnews.com br


Traffic Disrupted by Maoist Protest

Kathmandu, Dec.12: Maoists Tuesday protested the killing of a woman activist in Chitwan district four days by police and disrupted vehicular on the Mahendra Highway affecting arrivals and departures from the capital, transporters said.

The rebels were protesting the killing of a woman activist in a police firing Saturday in Bharatpur in Chitwan district injuring nine others, including five policemen, to force closure of educational establishments nation-wide demanding among other things free primary education in government schools as publicized.

Traffic on the national highway to the capital was diverted through Hetauda in Chitwan district to avoid Bharatpur, the centre of the protest.

Government officials, Maoists students and guardians have been meeting this week to reopen schools closed by Maoists threats to meet their demands break the closure of educational establishments.nepalnews.com br


Ace Finance Company to Distribute Dividend

Kathmandu, Dec.12: Ace Finance Company Limited ( AFCL) will distribute 20 percent dividend at Rs.20 per share this year, the finance company announced at the annual fifth general meeting.

The company made a profit of Rs.110 million in the fiscal year 1999/2000 as investment upto mid July  reached Rs.421 million.

The company will issue rights shares to double capitalization from Rs.445 million as directed by the Nepal Rahstra Bank. nepalnews.com br
