rebels stepped up their violent attacks this week to mark the beginning of
the sixth year of the People’s War. In Narayanpur village in Kailali
district Maoists hacked a woman to death. Shanta Rawal was dragged out of
her home and hacked to death with a khukuri for reasons as yet unknown.
Insurgents also made an abortive bid to run over a police outpost at
Barhabise Thursday night, but security personnel managed to fend off the
armed group. In another attack, rebels destroyed equipment in a storeroom of
the Nepal Electricity Authority Thursday morning in Baglung in west Nepal,
police said. A flour mill belonging to an activist of the Nepali Congress
party in a village in Bardia district was also bombed Wednesday. Kathmandu, 15 February: Coinciding with the beginning of the sixth year of the insurgency Maoist rebels intensified attacks against the police. Three police posts were bombed in different villages in Palpa district Monday but there were no casualties. The insurgents also attacked some homes at a village in Baglung district in west Nepal and decamped with six guns, police said. Arms and ammunition were also looted by insurgents from a house in Ithari in east Nepal this week. The police too have intensified patrolling in the capital and elsewhere expecting a surprise attack as rebels set off explosions in sub-urban areas. Nepalnews.com/br/at Kathmandu, 15 February: The Nepal Tourism Board, Nepal Association of Tour Operators and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Civil Aviation have agreed to file a writ at the Supreme Court to ban strikes at hotels as workers threaten another round of strikes to enforce a 10 percent compulsory service charge from Monday. "We are forced to repeatedly tell visitors that there are no strikes. Strikes have had a crippling effect on the industry," said Tek Bahadur Dangi Marketing Director of the Nepal Tourism Board. Tourism entrepreneurs are knocking the doors of the Supreme Court after getting no response from the government to declare strikes at hotels illegal by declaring hotel services essential. Hotel workers have threatened to continue their strike that had been put off two months back after the government agreed to find a solution to their demands of a compulsory 10 percent service charge, if the government does not respond latest by Saturday. The committee headed by vice chairman of the National Planning Commission Prithvi Raj Ligal has submitted its suggestions to the government on the issue but details of the report have not been made public. This is in addition to two consignments of nine tonnes of relief material already sent there. The army aircraft will also fly back Nepalis injured and stranded in one of India’s worst quakes. The meeting of the House of Representatives, Lower House of Parliament, was
adjourned for the second day today as opposition parties blocked the
proceedings of parliament demanding resignation of Prime Minister Girija
Prasad Koirala. As soon as Speaker Taranath Ranabhat began the proceeding of
the Lower House of Parliament, lawmakers of main opposition CPN-UML,
Rastriya Prajatantra Party, National People's Front, United People's Front
and Nepal Majdoor and Kisaan Party stood in front of the speaker's seat
blocking the rostrum and began chanting slogans demanding the premiers
resignation over the controversial deal with Lauda Air. The Nepal Sadbhavana
Party however did not support the rest of the opposition. Khum Bahaur Khadka dismissed Japanese grant for martial arts Kathmandu, 13 February: Japan will provide a grant of $ 90518 equivalent to Rs 6.6 million to build a martial arts centre in the capital to promote the sport, an announcement said. Japanese Ambassador Mitsuaki Kojima and Mayor Keshab Staphit signed the grant contract Monday coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the establishment of sister city relationship between Kathmandu and Matsumoto City. The Japanese city will donate tatami mattresses, judo and kendo units to the education centre to be located at Nayabazzar. The entire Thimi team has also been banned from the national team for one year as a penalty for not being disciplined. Binod Shankar Palikhe member secretary of the National Sports Council, Nepal’s apex sporting body, announced the penalties after the controversial finals of the Mayor Football Cup. The finals between Dharan and Thimi ended 2-1 when Thimi walked out of the field six minutes before the end of play and refused to attend the prize distribution ceremony after the referee awarded a controversial goal to Dharan. She died at home unable to afford treatment at a hospital, a report said. Kayastha is survived by 30 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Those who were killed in the accident are Barohi Paswan, Ram Swarup Das and Lothiya Yadav. According to police, the truck, which was heading for Sagarnath of Sarlahi, overturned when it tried to overtake a passenger bus. There were more than 50 people in the truck, police said.
