Khadka vows to eliminate corruption, smuggling, terrorism

Kathmandu, Jan 19: Minister for Home Purna Bahadur Khadka said that the government was committed to eliminate corruption, commission, smuggling, bureaucratic  red tape and terrorism.  Instructing civil servants and police officials in Biratnager Wednesday, Home Minister Khadka said that civil servants and police should work in  line with this commitment of the government.  He told the civil servants and police to ensure that people get quick  and efficient services from the government agencies.  He also instructed civil servants and police to work with the feeling  that they are servants of the people and should give up the mentality of  rulers.

Civil servants and police should implement the government policy of  supporting the victims of Maoist insurgency and rehabilitate those who  give up arms under Ganesh Man Singh Peace Campaign.  He said that the Maoist insurgency is not a political movement but a  terrorist outfit. Anybody who tries to compare Maoist insurgency with political movements would harm Nepal’s democracy.  Home Minister instructed the police and civil servants to provide sense  of security to the people and prompt services.


Hits FM Music Awards 2056

Ram Krishna Dhakal, nominated in three categories in the Hits FM Music Awards 2056 sponsored by Close Up, walked away with the trophies in the all three categories. He won the trophies in the categories of Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Best Male Vocal Performance. Ram Krishna Dhakal’s song “Man Paraune Hajaar” was also declared the Song Of The Year. Ram Krishna Dhakal accepted the trophy on behalf of lyricist Kali Prasad Rijal who was not present due to ill health.

The 2 hours 45 minutes show kicked off with a brilliant peformance from the triple nominee 1974AD featuring Gurudev Kamat and Manos Singh. Other performers included Rajan Ishan, Uday & Manila Sotang, Anand Karki, Ram Krishna Dhakal, Reema Gurung, Haribansha Acharya and Deepak Bajracharya.

Singers Umesh Pandey, Prakash Shrestha, Lochan Bhattarai, Kumar Basnet, Meera Rana, Harish Mathema, director Yadav Kharel, lyricist Kshetra Pratap Adhikari, musician Shila Bahadur Moktan, actress Mithila Sharma, Actor Gopal Raj Mainali gave away awards in various categories.

Prem Dhoj Pradhan gave away the life time achievement award to Koili Devi, who was not present. Anand Karki accepted the award on behalf of Koili Devi. Koili Devi, the noted singer, lyricist, musician, is better known as the nightingale of Nepal. She is the first nepali female composer and the first woman to sing a devotional song on Radio Nepal.

Navin Bhattarai walked home with a trophy for the third year running as he shared the award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, with Deepak Bajracharya, who, with Navin Bhattarai and Nalina Chitrakar, has been nominated in the Hits FM Music Awards every year since its inception in 1997.

Anup Shivakoti and Mandira Dhungel of Hits FM hosted the show with a comedic flair.

Four Sherpa women to attempt Mt Everest

Kathamndu. Jan 16: Four Sherpa women announced that they would jointly make an attempt to climb Mt Everest, the tallest mountain peak in the world, in the spring season of 2000.

According to Sushma Memorial Trust, organiser of the Nepalese Women Millenium Everest Expedition Campaign, the four women who would try to climb the Mt Everest are Lakpa Shrepa, Minga Yangzi Sherpa, Dawa Yagzi Sherpa and Dolma Sherpa. The Asian Trekking is to manage the expedition, while some airlines and travel related companies have already expressed commitment to provide different kind of support to the Nepalese women's expedition. 

Sujata Koirala, chairman of the Sushma Koirala Memorial Trust, would act as the coordinator during the entire period of expedition of Nepalese Women Millenium Everest Expedition.


Nepal-US Multi-Platoon training begins; Nepal proposed regional peacekeeping training center

Kathmandu, Jan 16: The Multi-Platoon Training of the army staff from different countries began in Royal Nepalese Army Peacekeeping Force Training Center in Panchkhal today.

The training event was jointly organised by Royal Nepalese Army and United States Army Pacific Command.

Prime Minister, who is also holding the defense portfolio, inaugurated the two-week training.

Participants in the multi-platoon peacekeeping training are from Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Unites States of America, Australia,Canada, China, Fiji, India, Kazakhastan, Krigizstan, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga and the United Kingdom.

Present in the inauguration programme were chief of the army staff of Nepal Prajwalla Sumsher Rana, Chief the Staff of United States Army Pacific Command Admiral Dennis C Blair, Chief of the Army Staff of Bangladesh Major General Hasan Mashud Chaudhari and deputy chief of the army staff of Sri Lanka Major General KJC Parera.

In the inaugural function, Nepal’s Chief of the Army Staff Prajwalla Sumsher Rana proposed that Nepal be declared South Asian Regional Peacekeeping Training Center.

The commander in chief of US Pacific Command Admiral Dennis C. Blair also endorsed Nepal’s proposal for making Nepal as South Asian Regional Peacekeeping Center.

Admiral Blair also praised Nepal Army’s excellent performance in the peacekeeping operation everywhere in the world.

Similarly, Assistant Secretary General of the UN Peacekeeping Department Yong Jin Choi also supported the idea of developing Nepal as the regional peacekeeping training center of South Asia.

According to Joi, Nepal possesses peacekeeping forces with high level of competence and quality, which could be developed as regional peacekeeping center.


Nepal defeats Kenya in under 19 World Cup Cricket; enters Super League

Kathmandu, Jan 16:  Nepal entered into Super League from Group ‘O’ by defeating Kenya in the under 19 World Cup Cricket being played in Sri Lanka, according to Cricket Association of Nepal.

The Nepalese team defeated rival Kenya by 14 runs in 44.5 overs losing all wickets.

Nepal scored 107 runs in today’s match with Kenya.


Crown Prince Dipendra returns

Kathmandu, Jan 17: Crown Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev returned to Kathmandu today (Monday) after attending the funeral of Maria De Las Mercedes De Borbon, mother of King of Spain Juan Carlos.

Crown Prince flew into Kathmandu from Doha, Qatar today.

Crown Prince had arrived Doha Saturday.

Upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, Chief Justice Keshav Prasad Upadhyay, Chairman of National Assembly Dr Mohammad Mohsin, Chairman of Rajparishad Standing Committee Dr Keshar Jung Rayamajhi, ministers and high-ranking officials of His Majesty’s Government and Royal Palace received the Crown Prince.

Crown Prince Dipendra had left for Spain on Jan 10 and attended the funeral in Madrid on January 13.


Maoist rebels kill at least three people including activist of CPN-UML

Kathmandu, Jan 17:
Maoist guerillas killed at least three people including one senior activist of main opposition party CPN-UML in western district of Syangja, about 250 kilometer west of Kathmandu, police said.

The CPN-UMl activist who was killed by communist insurgents is Xhin Bahadur Budhathoki. according to police, he was brought from his own residence and hacked to death.

In other parts of the country as well, there are reports of several assualts and killings but deatils reports are not yet recieved.


UN to develop regional peacekeeping training center in Nepal

Kathmandu, Jan 17:
United Nations has supported the proposal to develop Nepal as a regional peacekeeping center of South Asia.

Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations Young Jin Choi said that such a regional peacekeeing center is needed in South Asia and UN welcomes Nepal’s initiative to develop such training center.

Chief of the Army Staff Prajwalla Sumsher Rana had earlier proposed that Nepal be declared as regional peacekeeping training center of South Asia.

In an interview to Nepal’s National News Agency, Choi said that Nepal’s contribution in the UN peacekeeping operations has been excellent and Nepal has the experience of conducting such a training centre.

More than 35,000 troops of Nepal have already participated in peacekeeping operation in different trouble spots of the world at the call of the United Nations. Thirty-five Nepalese soldiers have been killed in the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations in different parts of the world.

Choi came to Kathmandu to attend the inaugural function of the multi-platoon peacekeeping training in Kathmandu.


RPP (Chand) no longer exists, Devkota's act illegal; says Lokendra Bahadur Chand

Kathmandu, Jab 18: Leader of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RRP) Lokendra Bahadur Chand said that RPP (Chand) no longer exists as it legally merged with the RPP recently.

In a press conference organised in the RPP central office today, Chand said that RPP (Chand) merged with RPP as per the decision of the central committee.

" Thus, there should be no confusion about that", said Chand.

Some members of RPP (Chand), who were dissatisfied with the unification with RPP, decided to revive RPP (Chand) with electing Rajeshwar Devkota its new chairman.

Devkota said that merger with RPP did not comply with the constitution of the party.

However, Chand described Devkota’s act as " self-styled decision of declaring oneself as party chairman".

Chand said after the unification RPP (Chand) does not legally exist and decision to revive it is illegal.


Koirala asks NC workers to foil conspiracies of anti-democratic elements

Kathmandu, Jan 18: President of the ruling Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala said that reactionary and anti-democratic elements one after another are hatching conspiracies against democratic polity.

Addressing a function organised by the Nepali Congress Central Coordination Department in Kathmandu today, Koirala said that all Nepali Congress workers have to remain alert and fight against the conspiracies of such reactionary elements by mobilizing people right from the grassroots level.

" People have to be empowered and their active participation in the political process has to be ensured in order to strengthen democracy", he said.

The best way to empower people at the grassroots level is the absolute decentralization of authority which would not only increase the power of the people but also consolidates democracy, he said.

He also claimed that the Maoist insurgency is a part of reactionary conspiracy against democracy.


Several aircraft grounded on technical ground

Kathmandu, Jan 18: The government decided to ground several aircraft in domestic services as they were found technically unsuitable to fly. The technical team headed by Director General of Nepal Civil Aviation Authority Nagendra Prasad Ghimire made a surprise inspection in the Pokhara Airport Tuesday, which found several airlines not to have properly maintained their aircraft and taken required air safety measures.

Based on the technical team’s report, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has decided to ground two Donier 228 aircraft and one MI-17 helicopter of Cosmic Air, a recently established private airlines company.

The inspection team also found two Twin Otter aircraft of governemnt owned Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation technically defective. The government has grounded these two RNAC Twin Otter aircraft until they were properly repaired and maintained to meet the required air safety measures.

An Y-12 aircraft was also grounded until it was technically repaired and corrected.

Similarly a micro light aircraft (power glider) of Avia Club was also grounded, as its pilot’s license was not in accordance with the requirement of the Civil Aviation Authority to fly power glide.


Fire guts noodle factory; properties worth tens of millions rupees damaged

Kathmandu, Jan 19: Fire suddenly broke out in the Noodle Factory of Chaudhari Group in Bhaisepati, Lalitpur Wednesday that destroyed properties worth tens of millions rupees.

The real extent of damage has not yet been ascertained. Police, however, said that properties worth about 30 millions rupees could have been damaged by the fire.

Police said the fire was caused by defects in electricity circuit. It took about four hours to put out the fire. Fire engines from all three districts of the Valley –Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur were used to extinguish the fire.


3 Indian policemen arrested in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Jan 19: Three Indian policemen were arrested Wednesday in New Road Kathmandu, said police. Those who were arrested belonged to Punjab Police of India.

Those who were arrested are Jaswant Singh, Khusbindar  Singh and Jaspal Sharma.

However, they were later released and handed over to Indian Embassy officials, police said.

Accoridng to police they were freely walking with the uniform of Indian police. Other details were not disclosed.


Nine Nepalese deported from UAE, 11 detained in London for allegedly possessing fake passports

Kathmandu, Jan 20: Nine Nepalese were deported from Abu Dhabi of United Arab Emirates for allegedly travelling with fake passports, reported an English daily The Kathmandu Post quoting immigration officials.

Similarly, London police detained 11 other Nepalese at London Airport on charge of travelling on forged travel documents and passports.

However, their identity was not disclosed.

Immigration Department has started investigation about their passport. If they were found guilty, action would be taken against them on forgery.


Bhattarai asks industrialists to invest more

Kathmandu, Jan 20: Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai said today that there would be no shift in the industrial policy at least for five years and asked industrialists to invest more without any fear and apprehension.

Talking to a delegation of industrialists and businessmen in his official residence today, Prime Minister Bhattarai said that the present government is committed to provide maximum facilities and incentives to national industries and industrialists.

Prime Minister Bhattarai also assured the team of industrialists to give attention to the problems and demands of the industrialists.

" The government would take immediate measures to solve some short-term problems and make its sincere efforts to solve the long-terms problems as well", he said.


Earthquake tremors felt in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Jan 20: Tremors of earthquake were recorded in Kathmandu today.

The magnitude of earthquake was 4.8 in the Richter scale, which jolted the Kathmandu Valley and its surrounding areas at 1839 hrs (1254 GMT) today.

According to Seismological Section of the Department of Mines, the epicenter of the earthquake was Phulping of Sindhupalchock (27.9’ latitude and 86.0’ longitude) about 70-kilometer (aerial distance) north east of Kathmandu.

No damage of life and property has been reported.


Nepali Congress expresses solidarity with Burmese democratic movement

Kathmandu, Jan 20: The ruling Nepali Congress party has supported the democratic movement in Myanmar and expressed its solidarity wit the people fighting for democracy in Myanmar.

Addressing an international symposium on Burma’s democratic movement held in Kathmandu Thursday, president of the ruling Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala said that as a democratic party Nepali Congress supports the democratic movement in Myanmar and hopes that democratic movement in Burma would soon be successful in restoring democracy.

The symposium was organised by International Confederation of Trade Unions and Trade Union Congress of Nepal.

Koirala said that democrats all over the world have opposed violation of human rights in Burma. He also called upon the rulers of Burma to listen to the demands of the people restore democracy and rights.

The 21st century would belong to freedom, democracy and human rights and Burma also cannot remain in isolation in this world-wide wave of democracy, human rights and liberty.

He also praised Burmese democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi for her courageous and unrelenting struggle for democracy and human rights.

He also asked the world community not to remain silent on the violation of human rights in Burma and support the democratic movement in Burma.


Nepal’s population to double in 33 years

Kathmandu, Jan 20: Nepal’s population is estimated to double in the next 33 years if the present population growth rates remained unchecked.

In a workshop organised in Kathmandu to discuss the long-term action plan on population management, population experts said the present population of Nepal is 22.4 million, which is expected to cross 32 million marks in the next 20 years.

The present population growth rate is 2.37 per cent, reproductive growth rate 4.35 per cent and child mortality rate is 65 in every thousand live births.

The government has target of maintaining reproductive growth rate at 2.1.

The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Population and Environment.

King Birendra appoints Manandhar secretary of Raj Parishad

Kathmandu, Jan 21: His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal, appointed Jit Bahadur Manandhar secretary of the Raj Parishad for the period of four years.

Manandhar is former bureaucrat, who worked in different ministries on different capacities.

Raj Parishad is the advisory body to the King.

Manandhar had retired from government service a few years ago on age bar.

Korea beats Bhutan by 6-0 in ANFA-Coca Cola football

Kathmandu, Jan 21: Korean team gave a shocking defeat to the national team of Bhutan by 6-0 in the first match of ANFA-Coca Cola International Football Tournament played in Dashrath Stadium Friday.

The Korean team scored five goals in the first half of Friday’s match and only one in the second half.

Tomorrow’s game will be played between Thailand and Bangladesh.


Bhutan People’s Party to intensify movement

Kathmandu, Jan 21: Bhutan People’s Party is to intensify struggle against the government of Jigme Singye Wangchuck of Bhutan to establish democracy and human rights in Bhutan.

In a press conference in Kathmandu Friday, R.K. Budhathoki, chairman of Bhutan People’s Party said that as the government of Bhutan has not listened to the demand of Bhutanese people for democracy and human rights, his party would now intensify struggle both inside and outside Bhutan.

Budhathoki also called upon the Bhutanese government to meet recently released Bhutanese democratic leaders Tek Nath Rizal to solve the problem of Bhutan and repatriate all the refugees living in different camps of Nepal.

Budathoki claimed that the government has intimidated and mentally tortured Rizal even after his release.

Bhutanese King has not met with Rizal for the resolution of the problem despite repeated plea of the Bhutanese democratic leader to meet with the King.

Rizal was released recently after almost ten years in prison. Rizal had been awarded life sentence.

According to Budhathoki, Bhutanese government has not allowed Rizal to move out of Thimpu.


Trade unionists call for political and economic pressure on Burmese Junta

Kathmandu, Jan 22: A three-day international seminar on democracy in Myanmar ended today, which adopted resolution calling international political and economic pressure on Myanmar’s junta to restore democracy and human rights.

The seminar was held in Kathmandu under the joint aegis of International Confederation of Trade Unions and Nepal Trade Union Congress.

In a press conference organised to inform the press about the conclusions of the seminar, trade union leaders from different countries, democracy and human rights cannot be restored in Myanmar without strong international political and economic pressure.

They called the international community to put more pressure against the military junta to restore democracy and human rights in Myanmar.


Thailand defeats Bangladesh in ANFA-Coca Cola football match

Kathmandu, Jan 22: Thailand beat Bangladesh in today’s match of the ANFA-Coca Cola Football Tournament by 2-1.

Thai team scored first goal in the 24th minute of the first half through penalty shootout.

However, Bangladesh equalised by scoring the goal at 38th minutes of the first half.

But the second goal of the Thai team in the 21st minute made Thailand victorious in today’s match.

Tomorrow’s (Sunday) match would be played between Nepal Red and Korea.


Maoist guerillas kill 6 policemen in Jajarkot

Kathmandu, Jan 22: Six policemen were killed in an ambush laid by Maoist guerillas in Jajarkot district, about 450 kilometer west of Kathmandu, Saturday, police said.

According to police, some other cops have also been injured in the incident.

The six policemen who were killed Saturday by the Maoist guerillas are Bisnu Basnyat, Ambar Rana, Lalit Rokaya, Tikaram Lungeli and Ram Bahadur Khatri.

Children under 5 years administered polio immunization

Kathmandu, Jan 23:

Under the special immunization programme, children under five years of age were administered polio vaccines today (Sunday).

The government with support from World Health Organisation had decided to launch three phases of special polio immunization programme on January 23, February 27 and March 26 to administer polio vaccine to 2.5 million children under five years of age.

The special polio immunisation programme was carried out 33 districts of Nepal.

The government has announced its plan to completely eradicate polio from the country.


Four killed; 24 injured in bus mishap in Janakpur

Kathmandu, Jan 23:

Four people were killed on the spot and 21 injured, some of them seriously, when a passenger bus met with an accident in Viman of Sindhuli, about 300 kilometer east of Kathmandu, today (Sunday), police said.

The identity of the four deceased has not yet been established.

The passenger bus bearing Na Aa Kha 7051 the registration number was bound for Sindhuli from Janakpur.

The bus belonged to Thapa Travels.

The 21 injured are now undergoing treatment in Janakpur hospital.

Other details are not known.


Nepal Red-Korea match ended in a draw

Sunday’s match played between Nepal Red and Korea under ANFA-Coca Cola Football Tournament ended in a draw as none of the team could score any goal.

As a result, both the teams score one point each.

Monday’s match will be played between Nepal Blue and Bangladesh.


JICA president arrives

Probe panel on hijacking submits report to govt

Kathmandu, Jan 24:

The high-level investigation commission formed to investigate all aspects concerning the recent hijacking of Indian passenger jetliner submitted its report to the government today.

The convenor of the probe panel Hem Bahadur Singh handed over the 63-pages (excluding annexes) report to Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar.

The contents of the report were not disclosed. However, Minister Gachhadar said that the government would make the report public once the government studies it.

He also informed that the government would implement the suggestions and recommendation of the report in order to ensure air safety. The government would also take strict action against those whom the report has found guilty in connection with the security and other aspects concerning the hijacking.

The report has suggested for action against some security, immigration and other officials at the Tribhuvan International Airport, sources said.

The convenor of the probe panel Hem Bahadur Singh said that the report contains suggestions to take immediate and long-term measures to improve the security system in the airport and other areas to ensure that such incidents may not take place again.

Singh, however, declined to elaborate saying the report was confidential.

The government had formed a five-member commission headed by Singh to investigate the hijacking of Indian passenger jetliner shortly after it took off for New Delhi from Kathmandu airport on December 24.

Other members of the probe panel were Tejendra Jung Thapa, Khem Raj Regmi, Bishnu Prasad Pant and Barun Prasad Shrestha.

Five Islamic militants had hijacked the IC 814 jetliner with 189 passengers and crews on December 24 and diverted to Kandahar of Afghanistan demanding release of three Kashmiri militants from Indian jail.

The government of India released the three Kashmiri militants to free passengers and crews of the hijacked plane.

Thai team defeat Nepal Blue

Kathmandu, Jan 26:

Thai Army team defeated Nepal Blue in today’s last league match played in Dashrath Stadium under ANFA-Coca Cola football tournament.

The Thai army team scored two goals against Nepal Blue, which could not even return a single goal. The Thai team entered into semi final.

Even after the defeat in today’s game, Nepal also entered into semi final.

The first semi-final match would be played tomorrow between Nepal Red and Korean team.


Castro invites Bhattarai

President of Cuba Fidel Castro invited Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai to attend the South Summit to be held in Cuban capital of Havana on April 10-14.

The visiting special envoy of Cuba Alberto Valexco San Jose met with Prime Minister Bhattarai and handed over Cuban President’s letter of invitation to him Wednesday, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Info-Tech show begins today

Info-Tech, an exhibition of information technology, is to be held in Kathmandu from today. The Info-Tech exhibition would last for five days.

The Info-Tech exhibition is being is being organised by Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) in support from Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce of Industries (FNCCI).

According to CAN, about 50 different companies involved in the field of information technology would take part in the exhibition and put up their stall.

The objective of Info-Tech is to make people aware of the different aspect of latest information technology.
