Long live His Majesty

The nation today is indeed proud to celebrate the fifty-fifth auspicious birthday of His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. On this gracious occasion, we take it as privilege to say that nothing perhaps would be more appropriate than extending to him the heartiest of felicitations on behalf of ourselves as well as our readers.Obviously, it is the general impression among most Nepalese that His Majesty the King has proved himself to be an inspiringly efficient monarch, who is ever firm and committed in the matter of performing his roles and duties as the constitutional Head of the State.

This aspect has made His Majesty even more endearing to the people. He is therefore highly respected for his sincere concern for the well-being of the people. Every Nepali appreciates His Majesty’s understanding of people’s woes and aspirations. That is why he reigns supreme in our hearts. There is no doubt that His Majesty’s role was people-friendly even prior to the restoration of democracy when he enjoyed absolute authority to govern the country. This is testified by his keen interest in development activities in all parts of the country and especially the development of the western region. His gracious announcement of the 1980 referendum was also indicative of his sensitivity towards the popular aspiration in the system of governance.

It is indeed noteworthy that, under the democratic constitution of 1990, His Majesty has played the roles set forth by the constitution with an unmatched sense of appropriacy even at a time when even political parties spearheading the struggle for democracy have been unable to act fully as per the spirit of the constitution. Here, it may be appropriate to further note that His Majesty’s role during all those years after the restoration of democracy has only enhanced the popularity of the institution of monarchy in the kingdom. Monarchy has ever been the symbol of national unity with us. But never before was this truth more prominent than now. The people today are convinced more than ever that monarchy is an institution that is above petty party politics and is concerned about the well being of the people.

As a leader who has never overstepped constitutional limitations or done anything that is against the authority granted by the constitution, even at times of apparent crisis, His Majesty has earned people’s love and faith as one who can guide the nation and its people through any travail. To such a monarch, we once again extend our heartiest felicitations and join the rest of the country in wishing a long and happy life.
