"2002 to be observed as Destination Nepal Year"

-By a Post Reporter

KATHMANDU, Nov 17 - Assistant Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Narayan Singh Pun said that the government would celebrate 2002 as Destination Nepal Year (DNY).

Assistant Minister Pun made this announcement today in a day-long seminar entitled Tourism Development in Khaptad Region organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MOTCA) here today.

The event is to be celebrated, according to Pun, in order to promote Nepal in the global market as a best tourism destination. He said that as Nepal is perceived as a wonderful tourism destination in the world, we are planning to exploit our tremendous tourism potentials through this event. Total Tourism Action Plan would be submitted at the forthcoming tourism council’s meeting that is to take place soon. The plan, he said, would be implemented effectively. The plan was prepared with the joint brainstorming discussion made with the private sector people.

Assistant Minister Pun hoped that by the year 2002 tourist arrival would reach one million though Nepal received less than half a million tourists during Visit Nepal Year 1998.

However, the minister agreed that government’s commitment is a must.

According to him, correspondence regarding the event would be completed by the year 2000 so that global visitors could manage their time to visit Nepal during DNY 2002.
