Punish irresponsible teachers

It was a shameful and inhumane deed on the part of the teacher who was responsible for creating an atmosphere of antagonism towards teachers in the society and education sector by forcing his students of class one to lick human faeces as a punishment. Yes, I am referring to the unbelievable news piece titled ‘Shit, what a punishment!’ that appeared in TKP on March 30. This case, in my view, is only a tip of the iceberg. Most of the students, especially those below 10, face humiliation and harassment of various kinds by their teachers (particularly male teachers), and the worst thing is that their parents and guardians remain unknown in most of the cases. Incidents as the above one are more likely to occur when schools, either private (boarding ) schools or others, tend to compete against one another by imposing strict rules on students with a pretension to prove themselves "better".

Some of the major causes that lead to such humiliations are: selection of indecent and immature teachers; negligence of the concerned school authority to evaluate teachers’ behaviour and character; strict but ostentatious rules; and above all the students’ habit of keeping mum despite being abused and harassed.

Being a teacher and a guardian myself , I do emphasize on the need for finding a way to keep such immoral and irresponsible teachers at bay so that our kids may lead their school life mentally undisturbed and physically safe. Hope the concerned authorities, including the education office and the police will take strict actions against the accused.
