Negative Nepalese mind-set

Apropos to the interesting article "Isn’t Nepal’s democracy already up to USA standards?" (9th April 2000), I would like to add a few points regarding the general mind-set Nepalese people have developed in the last ten years of democracy. Majority of them have started criticizing anything that could be termed as Nepalese.

This tendency of negative thinking on the part of Nepalese population in general has created such a situation that nobody is ready to even think of a single merit or benefit or advantage in any activities taking place in the country. For instance, the bottomline message from the general public as well as the press is: don’t go for purchase of Boeing jet or for projects like Melamchi or Arun or Enron or for that matter any development project, because it will lead to corruption at high places.

I agree with Mr Tamang that the political problem in Nepal should be taken as a political problem only, which is the case in any other democratic country of the world. But the problem is that, unlike in USA and other developed countries of the world, our political masters are not content to remain in the political arena alone, they want to participate actively and interfere in each and every other’s governmental and non-governmental activities which has nothing to do with politics.
