Prasad, Dayananda in doubles final

By a Post Reporter

LALITPUR, April 25 - Rashmi Prasad and Vindya Dayananda stepped closer to the women’s doubles title as they defeated Francoise Hewitt and Ceril Hoffman by 6-2, 6-3 Tuesday in the semifinals of the first King’s Cup Open Tennis Championship, organised by All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association (ANLTA).

Hewitt and Hoffman started well earning couple of big points early on only to see lose their composure as the match progressed. They also committed couple of unforced errors conceding vital points to their rivals.

On the other hand, Dayananda and Prasad, who already won several tournaments together, broke their opposition twice in the first set to take it at 6-2 and despite facing a few challenge in the second, managed to win that one as well by 6-3.

In the other matches of the day, Subha Ratna Shahi, Kamal Bhandari and Sanu Gurung were all safely through to the semifinals following their straight sets victory in the men’s single event.

Subha Ratna Shahi, despite catching in with the age showed no signed of fatigue as he easily outgunned Rameshwor Thapa by 6-1, 6-2.

Shahi, who with his biggest asset of highest first serves percentage forced Thapa to his back foot all the time. Thapa also could not match him in shots as he found wanting to counter Shahi’s brilliant volley game, quickly killing the rally.

He was joined in by Kamal Bhandari and Sanu Gurung in the semifinals, who also posted easy win over Raju Chhetri and Krishna Ghale by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2 respectively.

Ghale, who used to be at least in the last four in any major tennis events, seemed to have lost his edge in this competition going tamely to Sanu Gurung. Even his aggressive serve and volley game failed to rescue him from trouble against much superior Gurung.

In the men’s veteran singles, Kamal Thapa announced his fine form in the game with a straight set, 6-0, 6-3 win over Tashi Ghale to enter the quarterfinals. Madhukar Rana and Sakai Yamada also were in brilliant form in their respective straight set win over Memo Ferera and Kancha Gurung with the score of 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-2.
