Lama, Gyalchen through to last eight

By a Post Reporter

KATHMANDU, Aug 18 - Rajen Lama and Tshering Gyalchen both registered a straight forward win here Friday to book a place in the last eight of the San Miguel Champion of Champions Open Snooker tournament.

Lama, who looked quite rusty to start with during the initial stages of the tournament, came back to his true form winning two matches without dropping a frame. He also won his third round match in similar fashion.

Playing with authority, he compiled a string of smart breaks against Tshering and quickly went 1-0 up, 62-35, in the best of seven frame match.

Tshering gave some indication of a comeback midway through the second frame when Lama missed a tricky pot at far pocket. But Tshering lost the initiative back again, failing to ram home the advantage. Lama, without letting go the opportunity took the frame at 60-47.

Although he was made to work hard on occasions, Lama was just too good for Tshering to pose any threat as he finished off the match, winning the third and fourth frames as well with the scores of 61-43, 58-40.

Tshering Gyalchen was another cueist to win comprehensively. His opponent Prakash Shrestha gave some flashes of brilliance in the opening frame but he could hardly do anything once Gyalchen found his rhythm.

After taking the first at relatively less margin at 58-35, Gyalchen was virtually unstoppable, getting away from Shrestha with vital breaks in each of the last three frames for 87-10, 87-49, 70-43 win.

Both Tashi Wangchuk and Sanjay Mulmi, meanwhile, advanced to the quarterfinals with a score of 4-2.

Wangchuk, after winning the opening frame, 73-33, lost his concentration for a while and found himself 1-2 down to Jaggu Sahid, who won the second and third by 67-45, 59-45. But as a true champion cueist, he was back into swing of things pocketing the following three frames at 85-7, 83-9, 62-35 to move ahead.

Mulmi crawled back from a frame down and the fifth frame to beat Indra Gurung with the score of 45-61, 69-47, 59-34, 56-38, 56-99, 84-23.

Also to reach the last eight were Suraj Singh, Rashmi Shrestha, Ganga Thapa and Shankar Thapa. Singh and Shrestha got past Kenur Joshi and Raju Gurung respectively by 4-1 while Ganga Thapa and Shankar Thapa had 4-2 win over Bhusan Shrestha and Pranil Dhoj Karki.

All the quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Saturday.
