Caravan, runs housefull again
Post Report
KATHMANDU, Dec 2 - Caravan did not win the Oscars, but it
certainly has won many a hearts back home.
Even at the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival
today, the Eric Valli movie ran with packed seats and the organizers ran out of tickets.
Ultimately, arrangements were made for another showing at an alternate hall in the same
festival venue.
Yes, much have already been talked about the 105 min feature
film shot against the picturesque mountains of Dolpo district. But in The Making of
Caravan, also previewed at the festival today, Eric has definitely proved that success
does not come without hard work.
With the 200 porters and 150 yaks on his 79 days for shoot
along the mountainous terrain with temperature even creeping up to minus 15 degrees
Farehnheit, Eric tells his crew, "hes (the film crew) is not in a beach resort
in France." And, despite the monsoon snow the crew had to experience, he has not only
given a way to preserving the culture of the salt traders, but also makes a point that
movie making requires a lot of team work.
Not to forget, apart from opening international film making
in the country, Eric has also taught the countrys too much Bombay inspired
movie-makers how to really make one.
The audience was surprised to learn the fact that the yak
that falls on Lake Phokshundo in the movie, is actually a inflatable dummy yak made out of
fibreglass.
Meanwhile, answering to queries of the audience, Jean
Tregomain, executive producer of Caravan, highlighted that the exposure the Dolpo people
have received with the movie. "We will be establishing a school in Dolpo," he
said.
"The next venture of the Caravan team is a movie about
birds and their migration shot in Jomsom, Mustang district," he further added.
In toto, as Tregomain put it in person at the end of the show
today: "If Oscars were held in Nepal, Caravan will have it." Yes, certainly you
would!
Caravan will be on a re-show on December 4 (6:15 p.m.).
