Vegetables prices rise more than
196 pc over a decade

KATHMANDU, Feb 14 - The prices of food and
vegetable items in the last decade (1990-2000) has increased from 82.79 to 196.47 percent.
It was mentioned in a press release issued today by Agricultural Market Development
Division of Agriculture Ministry.
The release mentions that in food crop the price of
fine grade of rice has increased by 142 percent and medium grade rice by 112 percent. The
price of the fine grade of rice was Rs 11.3 in 1990, which has now increased to Rs 26.71.
Similarly, the price of coarse rice has increased
by 125 percent, wheat by 130 and maize by 139 percent. The price of coarse rice in 1990
was Rs 7.73, which has now reached to Rs. 17.42. During the review period the price of
wheat flour rose from Rs 6.75 and maize from Rs. 4.81 to Rs 15.5 and Rs 11.49,
respectively.
In beans category, price of Rahar pulse has
increased highest by 168 percent, followed by red lentil and black lentil by 149 and 114
percentage, respectively. The prices of Rahar was Rs 19.52, lentil 15.39, black lentil Rs
18.78 in 1990, which increased to Rs 52.32, Rs 38.30 and Rs 40.19, respectively.
According to the Division, the vegetable prices
have also increased in the same way during the review period. The highest surge is in
vegetables and potato, which is up to 196.47 percent, and the lowest increment is in okra
by 70.45 percent. Similarly, in fruits apples price has increased by 70.4 percent
and guavas by 175.8 percent.
In 1990 the prices per kilogram of dry beans was Rs
9.53, brinjal Rs 4.9, cauliflower 10.97, cowpea Rs 18.86, green pea Rs 22.2, lady finger
Rs 17.42, pointed gourd Rs 24.73, potato Rs 13.46 and radish Rs 7.07.
The division has mentioned that the market price
study was conducted in comparative basis.
