Khukuri Gold Cup gets even bigger

KATHMANDU, Feb 14- This year’s Khukuri Gold Cup football tournament will kick off from Feb 27 and will conclude on March 18, it was announced at a press conference here today.

The tournament, sponsored by Surya Tobacco, is divided into two rounds and will have the second or the final round from March 9. The first round will be played in Chitwan and Nepalgunj which will lead upto the final round in Kathmandu.

A total of 34 teams from Nepal will participate in the tournament which has allocated a cash award of Rs 2,10,000 to the team coming first while the second placed team has been allocated a cash award of Rs 1,00,000.

There is also prize money of Rs 10,000 to the highest goal scorer of the tournament.

The teams have been divided into two sections comprising eight groups and the group leader from each group will qualify for the final round.

All the prize money have been doubled this year and the tournament format has also been changed. Unlike in the past when the defending champions used to advance directly into the final round, each and every team this year will have to qualify for the ‘elite’ round by vying it out in the first round.

Addressing the press conference, Ganesh Thapa, President of All Nepal Football Association said that the main objective of the tournament is to strengthen the club sides of Nepal.

Answering a query, President Thapa also informed that ANFA’s next focus would be the development of valley’s league football.

Meanwhile, Brand Manager of Surya Tobacco, Binod Jung Thapa informed that the tournament will cost a total sum of 13-14 lakhs rupees.

The participating teams are as follows:

Venue No 1- Chitwan
Group A:Manang Marshyangdi Club, Morang, Mahottari and Sindhupalchowk.
Group B: Mahendra Police Club, Dhanusha, Ilam and Makwanpur.
Group C: Friends Club, Jhapa, Chitwan and Rautahat.
Group D: Sunsari, Jawalekhil Youth Club, Saptari, Parsa and Kavre.

Venue No 2- Nepalgunj
Group A: RCT Club, Rupandehi 11, Kailali and Naxal Yuba Mandal.
Group B: New Road Team, Three Star Club, Palpa and Boys Sports Club.
Group C: Kaski, Sankata Boys Sports Club, Banke and Bansbari Club.
Group D: Tribhuvan Club, Kanchanpur, Boys Union Club, Kathmandu Club and Dang.
