NAAA honour athletes, coaches

KATHMANDU, Feb 18- Nepal Amateur Athletic Association (NAAA) organised an award ceremony for the outstanding athletes and coaches who have contributed in the field of athletics here today amidst a special ceremony.

Chief guest and Minister for Youth, Sports and Culture Sharat Singh Bhandari felicitated various athletes who had bagged medals in the 8th SAF Games and coaches and judges.

Minister Bhandari also gave away cash prizes to the athletes who bagged medals in the 8th SAF Games. Gyan Bahadur Bohra, the winner of silver medal in the 8th SAF Games was awarded 15,000 rupees. Bohra had clocked 14:50:10 sec in 10,000 m to secure second position.

Ganesh Bahadur Rai, bronze medallist in the marathon event, Khursid Ahmad Khan, bronze medallist in javelin throw and Yum Bahadur Pudasaini, bronze medallist in 10,000 m were each awarded 10,000 rupees.

Similarly, the bronze medal winning women relay team of 4x100, comprising Devi Maya Paneru, Bina Shrestha, Samigya Shakya and Sushmita Thapa each were awarded 10,000 rupees. Beside Paneru and Bina Shrestha, Hari Maya Chaudhary and Kesh Maya Shirish, who were also the members of 4x400 m relay team received 10,000 rupees.

The athletes of the year award went to Khursid Ahmad Khan in men’s section and Devi Maya Paneru in women section. Meanwhile, 49-year-old Madhu Shamsher Rana, the first long distance medalist was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement award.

Minister Bhandari also conferred Silver Letter of excellence in athletics to coaches and team manager of 8th SAF Games for their outstanding contribution. Bishwa Prakash Thapa (head coach), Bhairab Shashi, Pushpa Raj Ojha, Chandra Gurung, Baikuntha Manandhar, Narayan Yadav, Narayan Pradhan, Nara Bahadur Shashi, Sushil Narsingh Rana, Amiri Yadav and Mohan Ghale were awarded the Silver Letter of excellence.

The Silver Letter of excellence was also awarded to Nepal Police and Royal Nepal Army. AIG Ram Kaji Bantawa received the award on behalf of Nepal Police while Maj Binod Bista received it on behalf of Royal Nepal Army.

There were also Certificate of Recognition and Blazers presented to the first team of National Technical Officials who had successfully completed and passed the IAAF level 1 Judges course. Narayan Yadav, Mani Chitrakar, Narayan Pradhan, Patrick Wilson, Sushil Narsingh Rana, Chandra Bahadur Gurung, Tika Sedhai, Pushpa Raj Ojha, Bishwo Prakash Thapa, Ananda Thapa, Nirakar Yakthumba, Amulya Sharma and Rabi Raj Karnikar received the technical official coat.

Addressing the occasion, Minister Bhandari said that keeping in mind the long term development of sports in the country, the government has decided to establish Special Sports Programme in all the 205 constituencies of the country.

Minister Bhandari also said that the government will launch National Training Centre for the development of sports in places where there is scope for any particular sport.

Meanwhile, Binod Shankar Palikhe, Member Secretary of the National Sports Council (NSC) said that it is high time the athletic association end its existing controversy. "It is really unfortunate that we come to know of such controversy through media, while nobody even contacted us to solve the problem," he said affiliated to NSC.

Palikhe also categorically announced that the athletic association with Rukma Shamsher Rana as the President is the only genuine athletic association.

Rukma Shamsher Rana, President of Nepal Olympic Committee and NAAA, addressing the occasion said that NAAA is committed for the development of athletics in the country. He also informed that Asian Marathon will be conducted next year in Nepal.
