Political climate
deteriorating
By a Post Reporter
KATHMANDU, Feb 20 - The countrys present
political climate is in an unhealthy state. The government must wake up and redress the
balance to maintain democracy in the country.
Such views were expressed by various participants,
today, at a meet organised by the Nepal Cultural Association.
Damannath Dhungana, a representative of the
association said that the state of the nations politics reflected badly on Nepal as
a whole. "The Nepali Congress party is deteriorating even with a majority in the
government. Even as we speak, there is faction fighting," he said.
To bring about necessary changes, he said, that
early elections were of extreme necessity. He also praised past martyrs of Nepals
democratic movement, such as, Shukra Raj Shastri in his speech.
The chief guest at the meet, Ram Hari Sharma,
agreed that the present political scene needed drastic changes. He suggested that the
political leaders should, without delay, establish a Citizens Society in order to
evoke more public awareness and involvement by the people of the nation in general. He
also said that such a society could push the state into concentrating on much needed
political reform.
Another speaker, Raj Kumar Shrestha, executive
member of the association and organiser of the programme pointed out that the nation was
fortunate to still have Ram Hari Sharma who played a major role in Nepals first
democratic movment, back in 1950, to free the country from Rana rule.
"He is a living symbol of democracy and still
an important figure in our countrys democratic movement. During the Rana rule, the
main reason why he escaped the death penalty was that he was born into a Brahmin
family," said Shrestha.
