By a Post Reporter

KATHMANDU, Feb 26 - With a view to bring more effectiveness in the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT), investigations against VAT defaulters and VAT Act violators have been initiated.

Investigations, on the basis of sudden monitoring conducted by the VAT Department, Kathmandu, and VAT office, Lalitpur, have been initiated against 20 business enterprises.

The list of enterprises against which investigations have started include Padam Furniture Factory, Padam Shree Pvt. Ltd. and Altech Pvt. Ltd. in Gyaneshwor, Pradidha Trading and Laxmi Enterprises in Buddhanagar, Chandanwala International in Kantipath, Goyal Overseas Pvt. Ltd. Sissor Fashion Industries in Battis Putali, Mangal Maruti Enterprises in New Road, Minda Enterprises in Jai Bageshwori, Jagat Nirman Sewa in Putali Sadak, Rame Chhap Sherpa in Shantinagar, Groom Seven Pvt. Ltd. in Kamal Pokhari, Four Season Tours and Travels in Patan Dhoka, Summit Trading Pvt. Ltd. and Parimita International and Greenline International in Kupondole, Star Kasta Udyog in Thasikhel, Khosi Marketing in Lalitpur and Skyline Suppliers in Satdobato.

Sudden monitoring conducted against these firms revealed that they were not only involved in the manipulation of accounts to avoid tax but also did not issue proper bills to consumers. In addition, some enterprises were found not registered with the VAT department although their business on taxable goods exceeds the threshold level of Rs 2 million. The crackdown and investigation aim to bring all potential taxpayers into the VAT net.

VAT was enforced from November 17, 1997 and was fully implemented from July 17, 1999.
