MPC lift Amatya Gold Cup with 3-1 win

By a Post Reporter

BIRGUNJ, Feb 26 - Mahendra Police Club (MPC) clinched their third Amatya Gold Cup title, following a 3-1 win over NRT in the interesting final played at the local Narayani stadium here Saturday.

In the ninth appearances in the tournament since the restoration of democracy, MPC had reached the final as many as seven times. On four of the occasions, they had to settle for the second position.

NRT, who made a good start in the match went in front in the 31st minute through a stunning goal. But their joy was short lived as the police outfit, studded with several national team players hit back immediately.

New recruit, Sal Bahadur Karki, taking advantage of porous NRT defence levelled the score at 1-1 for MPC in the 34th minute.

Unlike the first half, NRT rarely brought up the ball to the MPCterritory while MPC dictated the pace and came up with repeated raids in the session.

Just three minutes into the second session, Hari Khadka added one more goal to give MPC a 2-1 lead.

MPC’s pressure on NRT paid off once again when Dev Narayan Chaudhary moved up to find the net and wrapped up the match 3-1 in favour of MPC.

After the match, NRT coach Maheshwor Mulmi, while giving his reaction to the reporters, said that the defeat was largely due to his team’s lack of co-ordination and poor defense.

Chaudhary, who played superbly both at the back as well as up front was named best player of the match while his skipper Anil Adhikari was declared best played of the tournament.

Chief guest of the occasion, Hashina Devi, wife of martyr Ganga Lal Shrestha, gave away Rs15,000 to the winners and Rs6,000 to the runners-up amid a function following the match.
