Khukuri Gold Cup begins

CHITWAN, Feb 27 - Mahottari and Makwanpur both began thier campaign in style, scoring comfortable win over Sindhupalchowk and Ilam under the Group A of the Khukuri Gold Cup football tournament which kicked off here Sunday.

Mahottari, applying early pressure went 1-0 up in the 29th minute through the goal of Dinesh Tharu. Taking advantage of opposition’s poor marking, he found the net two more times, in the 55th and 66th minutes of the match for a hat-trick.

The final score could have been better in favour of Mahottari but for spurn of easy chances in either halves.

The second match turned out to be even more one-sided affair where Makwanpur simply trampled their opposition Ilam by five unanswered goals.

All five of them were scored in the second session with Rupak Shresth opening their account in the 56th minute.

Birendra Rai made it 2-0 in the 70th minute while the remaining three were scored in the last twelve minutes.

Nima Lama, showing his class scored twice in the space of just seven minutes for 4-0 lead, thus taking the match beyond Ilam’s reach. And Rupesh Thapa also came among the goals when he found the net towards the end.

Elsewhere in the Group B fixture, taking place in Nepalgunj, both the Kathmandu teams--Boys’ Sports Club and Naxal Yuva Mandal started with the win.

In the opening match, Boys’ Sports Club scored a 3-1 win over Palpa. Rabindra Thapa put Boys’ Sports Club into lead in the 8th minute and Dipendra Tandukar made it 2-0 after three minutes. They took an unassailable 3-0 lead going into the second half when Uddhav Gautam scored at the stroke of half time.

The only goal for Palpa came in the 62nd minute from Rajan Gauchan.

Naxal beat Kailali by 2-1 in the other Group B match.

After the goalless first half, Kailali took a surprise lead through the goal of Ashok Bohara. But Naxal fought their way back to take the match.

Naxal’s equaliser came in the 71st minute through Umesh Thapa, capitalising on Kailali keeper while the winning goal was nailed by Suresh Thapa in the 85th minute of the match.
