Police claim  of busting Maoist rebel’s operation

-By a Post Reporter

NEPALGUNJ, Jan 6 - Days after the killing of nine policemen in a Maoist attack in Rarali, Jumla, police today said they finally have clues to the Maoist operation in Kalikot.

A letter recovered from a corpse buried in Phuidev VDC-3 gave details of the Maoist operation, according to the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Rajendra Bahadur Singh here at the Mid-western Police Office. Police suspect the corpse is that of a person who had sustained serious injuries during the attack on the police on Monday.

Police said the corpse bears gunshot wounds. Phuidev VDC-3 is five or six hours away from Rarali where the police-Maoist encounter took place on Monday. Police suspect the corpse was buried by Maoists themselves.

The gunbattle between the police and the insurgents lasted for over two hours before the Maoists overhauled the police. Rarali is a day’s walk away from the district headquarters.

The rebels first exploded the police post and beat up the policemen before killing them. They took away 17 rifles and three handguns that police had at the post.

In a separate incident, Maoists’ attempt to ambush a police team failed when the bomb went off moments before the patrolling team arrived near a school at Sari VDC in Pyuthan, according to Mid-western Police Office. The insurgents then fled the scene, police said.
