KATHMANDU, Jan 7 - A
hoax telephone call suggesting proper inspection of a Royal Nepal
Airlines Corporation (RNAC) aircraft which was due to fly to London,
prompted officials to delay the flight for more than five hours today.
The RA 229 Boeing 757
bound to London via Dubai and Frankfurt was scheduled to leave
Tribhuwan International Airport at 9:00 a.m. However, the aircraft
took off at 2:18 p.m. after re-inspection of security arrangements,
said Chief of TIA Security Section Superintendent of Police (SP) Binod
Singh.
According to him, army
and police experts on explosives and terrorist activities, and even
trained police dogs were mobilized for the thorough inspection
following the hoax call that said ‘please inspect the aircraft
carefully’.
He said the inspection
team carefully examined the passengers, cargo and the airliner as a
whole. During the five hour long re-inspection the aircraft’s
engineering test had also been conducted.
"But nothing,
which may be incriminating, was found," said Singh. Stating that
the unidentified caller did not identify himself, or gave any other
details, Singh speculated that the caller, who could be one of the
passengers failing to arrive at the airport on time, could have done
so in order to stop the aircraft. According to him, a few passengers
had arrived at the airport while the re-inspection works were on.
