Locals urged against girl trafficking

-By a Post Reporter

BIRATNAGAR, Jan 9 - In view of increasing incidents of girl-trafficking taking place in the country, it is not only the duty of the police, but also of the government and non-government organisations as well as the common people to control such incidents, speakers said at the inaugural function of a week-long training program on girl-trafficking and child sex exploitation organised here by Morang District Police Office.

Initiating the programme, Morang DDC President Khadga Bahadur Basnet said selling a Nepali woman to a brothel in India and compelling her to lead the hellish life of prostitution is a crime equal to murder. He also underlined the equal responsibility of all organisations to control such crime.

Basnet also said child sex exploitation was on the rise due to lack of adequate governmental laws to deal with such people.

General secretary of Nepal Municipality Association and mayor of Biratnagar Ramesh Chandra Poudel said a total of 150 thousand Nepali girls had been sold to brothels in India and the process is continuing. Therefore, society itself should look into such cases. They should also expose such people who involve themselves in child sex exploitation, he added.

Chief District Officer Tulsi Prasad Bhattarai emphasised that trained manpower should be posted at exit points in the country to control girl trafficking.

Superintendent of Police Kalyan Kumar Timsina of Morang District Police Office said a campaign had been launched to control girl-trafficking and added that awareness programmes will be held in all the VDCs and 22 wards of Biratnagar Sub-Metropolitan City.

According to Timsina, twenty-five police staff will receive training under the current training programme.
