CTEVT flayed for laying off staff

-By a Post Reporter

KATHMANDU, Jan 13 - The Prajatantrik Sangharsha Samiti (PSS) has flayed the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) for dismissing 31 of its temporary employees without prior notice on Jan 4.

At a press meet today, PSS said CTEVT vice-chairman Saroj Devkota, member secretary Jivan Raj Adhikari and Pramod Dhakal, Personal Assistant (PA) to Minister for Education, had made the “unfair” decision as a cover-up to their financial and other irregularities.

“Devkota accepts bribes to recognize technical institutions under CTEVT and forces employees to pass students from institutions he is affiliated to. CTEVT has become like Bihar University,” said PSS president Anil Kumar Manandhar indicating that the organization has become chaotic.

He said,”We were fired even without consulting any of the department directors by the higher officials who feared disclosure of their misdeeds. This is a pre-emptive bid to disband PSS, the employees' organization.”

He alleged Devkota of accepting hefty commissions while purchasing goods for the Council and accused him of his involvement in nepotism while recruiting employees.

“ Dhakal’s wife is receiving salary as an employee like us in Dhankuta. However, she never turns up for work,” complained PSS member secretary Suresh Chand. “How can she get paid by just sitting at home without working?,”he enquires.

The committee has given a seven-day ultimatum and warned they would move on to the second phase of their protest programme if their plea is not heard.

More than 900 people are presently employed all over the country by CTEVT which trains students on health, agriculture, computer and construction through its various institutions. The Minister for Education is the Chairman of the Council.
