Nepal’s match washed out again

-By a Post Reporter

KATHMANDU, Jan 18- Rain once again played spoilsport in the Youth Under-19 World Cup being held in Colombo, Sri Lanka as Nepal’s first match in the Super League against India was washed out in Kattunayak, Colombo stadium today.

The washout meant that both the sides were awarded a point each according to the rules of the tournament. Nepal next play against host Sri Lanka on Jan 20 and its last group match is against England scheduled for Jan 22.

From the beginning of the championship, the matches have continuously been washed out and this is Nepal’s third match that was washed out. Today’s match, however, had to be cancelled owing to overnight rain as it had rendered the pitch and outfield unplayable. The umpires this morning briefly went out into the grounds and after a  brief inspection of the pitch had called off the match.

Though it was realistically believed that Nepal stood little chance against the mighty India, and it is oft repeated phrase in cricket that “no prediction can be said about it”, Nepal got away once again, thanks to rain god.

And it was rain which had propelled Nepal into the super league, washing out two vital matches against Pakistan and South Africa. But in the match that mattered most to the Nepalese side against Kenya as it was widely believed that Nepal’s real strength will be judged in this match, Nepal came out with flying colours defeating Kenya in a close match and hence booking a place in the Super League stage.

Nepal’s entry into the Super League pushed South Africa, one of the favourites of the tournament , prior to the start of the championship out of contention. South Africa’s all three matches were washed out.

Out of the eight nations which have qualified into the Super League Nepal is the only country which does not have Test status.

The other group comprises West Indies, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The first two teams from each group qualify for semis.
