Punish the guilty

The way the nine of the twenty Nepali nationals sent by an unidentified manpower supply agent for overseas employment were deported the other day shows that this sector is largely unpoliced and in disarray. Those deported by the Abu Dhabi immigration authority would not have been so "humiliated" had there been some semblance of "responsibility and professionalism" on the part of those who supply manpower to foreign countries. This has not only maligned the country's image as a manpower supplier but also led them to believe that the country has become a haven for swindlers. This is also an insult to those genuine manpower suppliers who have been abiding by government rules and regulations. Their credibility too is at stake because of such incidents.

Some unidentified Kathmandu based foreign manpower agents had sent 20 Nepali nationals with fake passports to an undisclosed foreign country for employment. Fortunately, they were caught by the immigration authority at Abu Dhabi airport while sneaking into another aircraft. The manner the foreign employment agents had affixed the photographs of those who were travelling in the passport shows that such illegal activities are being carried out with the connivance of policing and non-policing authorities. What is surprising in this regard is that overseas job seekers even do not know the real culprits behind such heinous activities.

But there are some questions that have to be answered. First of all, how did overseas job seekers manage to get fake passports? Has the government taken any action against those foreign employment agents which were  involved in such activities in the past ? Has the government investigated how those with fake passports were allowed to board aircraft at TIA? The immigration scrutiny arrangement at the TIA appears to be less than adequate and the government does not seem to realise that professional people with training are required to man the positions at sensitive areas like international airports and international borders.

Last year, one of the foreign employment agents had deceived a number of overseas job seekers in the country. The government failed to trace the agent’s whereabouts, let alone taking any action against the firm. There are some people who have been running such rackets in the capital and such activities have pushed the country's image downward. This is due to the lack of effective implementation of laws on the part of the concerned authorities that this sort of things keep happening and innocent and gullible Nepalis are taken for costly rides. How long will the government keep silent and allow unscrupulous elements  to carry out such nefarious activities at the cost of the people and of the country's image? The government  has no option but to prevent such activities and punish those who are guilty.
