KATHMANDU,
July 19 - Nepal's hopes of making it in to the semifinals of the Asian Cricket Council
Under-17 tournament were dashed on Wednesday, losing out to Bangladesh by 143 runs.
According
to internet report, Nepal won the toss and put Bangladesh in to bat in the match played at
the Asghar Ali Shah Stadium, Karachi.
Nepal
had an early breakthrough in Nafees Iqbal (6), who was run out following a brilliant piece
of fielding at a total of 20. But Bangladesh, aspiring to be a force among the Test
playing nations, surged on strongly thereafter.
The
other opener, Mohammad Ashraful, made merry as he flogged on with seven fours and a couple
of sixes for his 102 to power Bangladesh to an imposing 225-4 in their allotted 45 overs,
before being another run out victim. Other batsmen Shafiul Alam (27), Nasir Uddin Faruque
(23), Shariful Islam (38 not out) also helped in raising the total.
For
Nepal, Manjit Shrestha and Kanishka Chaugain both picked one wicket apiece.
Facing
a challenging target of 225, Nepal's poor batting showed through clearly as they kept
losing the wickets at regular intervals, reaching 27 for 4. Sagar Pant was first to go,
falling lbw to Mohammad Sharif with the total at 4.
The
batsmen who followed became the victims of a penetrating spell of bowling and both Monik
Shrestha and Prem Chaudhary fell after 14 runs. Manjit Shrestha, who came to replace
Chaudhary did not last too long either as he was clean bowled by Shariful Islam for three.
Apart
from the 21-run fifth wicket partnership between Kaniska Chaugain , and skipper Binod Das
(11) and then 24-run stand for the eighth wicket between Amit Shrestha and Basanta Regmi
put some resistance, but the innings simply collapsed soon after their departure, losing
all ten wickets for 82 runs in 40.3 overs.
The
wickets were spread evenly around for the Bangladeshi bowlers with Shariful Islam, Shafiul
Alam, Mohammad Ashraful, Manjurul Islam bagging two wickets apiece.
Mohammad
Ashraful was later adjudged man of the match for his century knock. Nepal play their last
league match against Pakistan tomorrow.
